NEW DELHI: The Mahindra XUV 3XO's petrol automatic and diesel automatic use different transmission types. Mahindra lists a 6-speed automatic for its petrol engines and a 6-speed AutoSHIFT+ automated manual for diesel. The distinction is confirmed by its brochure and owner manual, and remains relevant when comparing automatic versions within the same model range.

The petrol automatic and diesel AMT are separate systems

Mahindra's original model announcement identifies the petrol automatic as a third-generation AISIN transmission. Its August 2026 owner manual describes the AMT as a manual-type transmission whose clutch operation and shifts are controlled hydraulically. Both remove the need for the driver to operate a clutch pedal, but their control arrangements differ.

The manual gives the AMT selector Neutral, Reverse and Automated/Manual modes. Its display distinguishes automatic gear selection from manual requests. The conventional AT section separately identifies Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. Familiarity with one selector should not replace reading the instructions for the other.

For a household sharing the car, that is an immediate ownership issue. The person who usually drives a petrol automatic should learn the diesel AMT's parking and starting procedures before taking it out. The word automatic on a conversation or quotation does not identify every control.

Where the brochure lists the automatic choices

The petrol and diesel variant walk in the brochure groups the automatic versions as follows. These are transmission availability entries, not a price list or a claim that every engine is supplied with every trim.

Automatic engine groupVariants listed
TCMPFi petrol ATREVX M(O), REVX EDGE, REVX EDGE (O), AX5
TGDi petrol ATREVX A, AX5L, AX7, AX7L
Diesel AMTREVX EDGE (O), AX5, AX7

The same brochure lists engine outputs of 82 kW for TCMPFi petrol, 96 kW for TGDi petrol and 85.8 kW for diesel. These figures help identify the engine groups. They should not be treated as a road-test verdict on shift quality, response in traffic or passenger comfort.

AX7 and AX7L illustrate why this matters: the brochure lists diesel AMT against AX7, while AX7L has diesel manual and the petrol TGDi choices. Moving between those badges is therefore more than an equipment comparison if the intention is to retain a diesel automatic. Read the availability cells before comparing the cabin features.

What the REVX expansion changed

Mahindra's REVX EDGE announcement describes the expansion as offering petrol manual and AT choices alongside diesel manual and AMT choices. It also introduced a petrol automatic version of REVX M(O). That makes the transmission suffix important even within the REVX naming system.

The announcement associates REVX EDGE with equipment such as a dual-tone roof, black wheel covers, black leatherette seats, a rear-view camera and cruise control. These describe the variant's equipment theme. They do not tell a reader which gearbox is fitted without the engine and transmission fields.

A useful comparison sheet therefore starts with the full variant name, then the engine, then the transmission. Only after those match should the equipment comparison begin. Otherwise, a discussion about upholstery or a sunroof can quietly become a comparison between different powertrains.

When arranging a demonstration, specify the complete powertrain rather than requesting any XUV 3XO automatic. If the available car has a different engine or transmission, note that distinction in your impressions. It prevents observations from that drive being applied to a version you have not experienced. Ask for the selector and parking procedure to be demonstrated while stationary before setting off.

Use the correct instructions during the drive

The owner manual warns against holding the AMT vehicle on an uphill slope with accelerator input. That is a specific operating point to understand before a hill start. It is also an example of why the handbook chapter for the fitted transmission matters more than a generic automatic-driving tip.

Our XUV 3XO price guide handles the separate pricing question. Read the XUV 3XO safety-rating extension report for rating applicability and the ZNG announcement for the distinct CNG development.
