Bharat NCAP has extended the Mahindra XUV 3XO's safety-rating coverage to additional petrol and diesel variants in an October 2026 revision. REVX, MX5 and AX5 TS combinations are included.
The revised official factsheet records September 2026 as the assessment month for the additions. Original testing remains dated October 2024. No specific October publication day is given.
Which XUV 3XO variants the extension covers
Among the REVX additions, the annexure lists REVX A under both TGDi petrol transmission columns. REVX EDGE appears for diesel manual and TCMPFi petrol manual and automatic. REVX EDGE (O) adds diesel automated-manual coverage alongside those combinations. REVX M is listed for TCMPFi petrol manual, while M(O) covers manual and automatic.
MX5 is listed for diesel and TCMPFi petrol manual and automatic. AX5 TS covers diesel manual and both TCMPFi petrol transmissions. Eligibility is specific to those combinations.
The revision follows Mahindra's 18 September introduction of REVX EDGE and the petrol-automatic REVX M(O). That announcement expanded the existing REVX range with further engine and transmission choices. It explains why the rating register now needs more than the variant list associated with the original assessment.
Mahindra's September release identifies two EDGE engines: a 1.2-litre TCMPFi petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. The petrol range has manual and automatic options; the diesel range includes manual and automated-manual options. The company's transmission matrix distinguishes EDGE from EDGE (O), with the diesel automated-manual offered on the latter. Rear AC vents and an adjustable driver's seat feature on EDGE.
Both EDGE versions were announced with six airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, reverse parking sensors, and three-point belts with reminders for all passengers. The equipment differences include a panoramic sunroof and automatic headlamps on EDGE (O). Those comfort and convenience additions are separate from the crash-rating eligibility recorded by Bharat NCAP.
The five-star result dates back to 2024
Mahindra announced the XUV 3XO's original five-star result on 14 November 2024. It reported 29.36 points out of 32 for adult protection and 43 out of 49 for child protection. The manufacturer also identified electronic stability control and all-wheel disc brakes among the model's safety features.
A later extension is permitted under AIS-197, the programme's technical standard. Clause 8 allows a rating to carry over to another variant when the manufacturer supplies declarations and documentary evidence that satisfy the designated agency. Manufacturers can apply in a later year, provided the original rating has not expired.
The standard says the agency tests an identified variant using the manufacturer's equipment matrix. Other variants can share its rating after the necessary supporting information is accepted. It also requires the agency to publish the applicable variants. A broader equipment catalogue alone therefore does not establish eligibility for an individual version.
The assessment year and protocol version remain important parts of that record. AIS-197 says design modifications affecting a vehicle's star rating invalidate the existing rating, although a documented carry-over can be allowed in specified circumstances. The process distinguishes a model-range extension from a fresh set of crash-test scores.
The prescribed laboratory tests include a frontal offset impact at 64 km/h, a side-barrier impact at 50 km/h and a pole-side impact at 29 km/h. Those controlled conditions define the assessment, rather than representing every possible collision on a public road.
Variant coverage remains the key consumer detail
Bharat NCAP itself began in October 2023, following the government's 22 August launch announcement. The transport ministry described it as a voluntary programme, anchored by the Central Institute of Road Transport, to help consumers compare vehicle performance under crash-test conditions. Its framework uses the base variant of a model for testing.
That purpose makes a published eligibility list useful beyond the headline star count. The government's stated aim was to provide comparable safety information and encourage manufacturers to improve vehicle safety. It did not describe the programme as a guarantee that occupants would escape injury in all accidents.
Dalimss News has separately covered XUV 3XO EV pricing and the Honda Rebel 500 recall. The electric 3XO is not listed in this petrol-and-diesel rating extension.
