NEW DELHI: Mahindra Thar ROXX Crawl Smart operates between 2.5 km/h and 28 km/h, according to the company's owner manual released in February 2026. On vehicles equipped with the feature, activation requires low-range four-wheel drive and the prescribed terrain and transmission settings. Knowing that operating window is only the beginning: the controls and the conditions matter just as much.

Prepare the vehicle before selecting the function

The manual specifies closed doors, a buckled driver seat belt and a released parking brake. Select the required settings, then press the CS switch in the driver-side switch bank. Pressing the accelerator or brake can make the function unavailable or deactivate it.

For an owner learning the system, that sequence is more useful than simply remembering the button's location. Treat preparation as part of the manoeuvre. A control that depends on the vehicle's existing settings should be understood before reaching the difficult section, rather than investigated halfway through it.

Where Crawl Smart fits in the ROXX

Mahindra's launch material describes a broader off-road package combining terrain modes, an electronic locking differential and IntelliTurn. It distinguishes 4XPLOR terrain modes for four-wheel-drive versions from XPLOR terrain assistance on rear-wheel-drive vehicles. A shared model name therefore should not be read as confirmation of identical off-road hardware.

The launch material also describes the M_GLYDE platform and a rear suspension using a Watt's linkage. Those are parts of the underlying vehicle; Crawl Smart is an operating aid layered onto the equipped version. Looking at hardware and electronic assistance separately makes the equipment sheet easier to understand.

The ROXX brochure lists a length of 4,428 mm and a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. It also lists approach, departure and ramp-over angles of 41.7 degrees, 36.1 degrees and 23.9 degrees respectively. These measurements describe different aspects of the vehicle's geometry. They cannot answer whether a particular trail is passable from a photograph.

The wheelbase figure is particularly relevant to the discussion of turning assistance. A feature that helps the vehicle negotiate a turn does not change the distance between its axles. Geometry and electronic intervention belong in the same assessment, with neither replacing the other.

Keep speed control and turning assistance distinct

The brochure identifies a part-time four-wheel-drive system with high and low reduction gearing on the relevant versions. That matters here because selecting low range is a specific mechanical setting. It is not interchangeable with choosing a terrain label on a display.

IntelliTurn performs a separate task: the manual says it brakes the inner rear wheel to help tighten an off-road turn and warns against using it on asphalt. A turning aid and a speed-control aid solve different problems, even when their switches sit close together.

In practical terms, learn each function independently. Being able to identify what the vehicle is supposed to do makes an unexpected response easier to recognise. An owner should be able to explain the selected function before demonstrating it to passengers.

For a family that shares driving duties, familiarity should extend beyond the person who normally takes the car off road. Agree who is driving and who is reading the instructions before a demonstration. Trying to explain an unfamiliar switch while moving adds an avoidable distraction.

Read the equipment sheet alongside the manual

Mahindra's brochure explicitly says equipment varies by variant. For a household using the ROXX for ordinary journeys as well as occasional trails, the useful question is whether the specific vehicle has the relevant controls and hardware. An impressive feature list for the whole range is not a substitute for that check.

Our Thar ROXX price guide covers the model range. The Thar and ROXX comparison provides the separate model context, while the Thar OG variant guide concerns that distinct vehicle.

Keep the matching owner manual available when learning the controls. Reading the operating conditions at home leaves the actual drive for observing the surface, choosing a route and maintaining control, which remain the driver's jobs.
