NEW DELHI: Nissan Tekton offers a 100PS T160 turbo-petrol engine with a six-speed manual, while the 163PS T280 has a six-speed manual or a six-speed wet-clutch DCT automatic. The engine badge therefore changes more than output: it also determines whether an automatic gearbox is available.
| Powertrain | Engine | Power | Torque | Gearbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T160 | 1.0-litre, three cylinders | 100PS | 166Nm | Six-speed manual |
| T280 manual | 1.3-litre, four cylinders | 163PS | 280Nm | Six-speed manual |
| T280 automatic | 1.3-litre, four cylinders | 163PS | 280Nm | Six-speed wet-clutch DCT |
The badge is not the torque figure
There is a small but useful detail in Nissan's specifications: the T160 develops 166Nm, rather than the number suggested by its name. The T280 does produce 280Nm. Treating the badges as identifiers and reading the actual specification avoids carrying an assumption from one engine to the other.
Both are turbocharged petrol engines. This is not a choice between an entry naturally aspirated motor and a turbo upgrade. The meaningful differences are engine size, cylinder count, output and transmission availability. Nissan's current product-page FAQ also states that both engines run on E20 petrol.
The T280's manual and automatic share the quoted maximum power and torque. Selecting the automatic does not mean selecting a different headline output. What changes is how the driver requests and manages gear changes, along with the official fuel-efficiency figure attached to that powertrain.
Read the mileage claim alongside the gearbox
Nissan quotes ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 19.4 km/l for the T160 manual, 17.8 km/l for the T280 manual and 18.5 km/l for the T280 DCT. Those are separate claims for separate combinations. They should not be treated as a single Tekton mileage figure or a promise for a particular commute.
That distinction matters when looking through listings. A specification headed simply 'Tekton petrol' leaves out information needed to understand the claim. The engine badge and gearbox should travel together, whether the reader is checking a variant description, an equipment sheet or a written quotation.
The existing Tekton price list sets out the wider variant ladder. This guide addresses the mechanical choice behind those names, rather than repeating the full list of grades and prices.
Where the powertrains enter the range
Nissan's official price page lists Visia T160 MT at Rs 10,49,000. The first listed T280 manual is N-Connecta at Rs 14,99,000, while the T280 DCT begins with Acenta at Rs 14,99,000. These are ex-showroom figures. Price as of 31 October 2026, 23:52 IST.
The matching entry prices for the T280 gearboxes do not describe matching equipment grades. The manual starts at N-Connecta and the DCT at Acenta. A comparison based only on the shared amount would conceal that difference. Engine, transmission and equipment level need to be read as separate parts of the variant name.
For broader positioning, the published Tekton and Magnite price comparison provides another reference. Ownership questions should be checked separately from engine output: the Magnite warranty explainer illustrates why a headline specification cannot substitute for reading the terms applying to the particular vehicle. This engine guide does not compare the warranty coverage of the two models.
Who each combination is for
The T160 is the relevant branch for someone seeking the Tekton's smaller engine and a conventional manual driving experience. Its place in the range also suits readers who want to examine equipment grades without assuming that every move upwards requires the larger motor.
The T280 manual is the branch for drivers who want the higher quoted output while retaining manual gear selection. The T280 DCT addresses those who want that engine with automatic shifting. Those descriptions identify the intended use of each combination; they do not establish which one will feel preferable on a particular route.
A useful test drive should therefore match the powertrain under consideration. Driving a T280 automatic cannot settle questions about clutch operation in the T160 manual, and driving the smaller engine cannot establish the larger engine's response. Keeping the exact combination in view makes the specification sheet a more useful guide.
