NEW DELHI: Ashok Leyland's Dost XL specification page lists both manual steering and power steering, alongside a 70 hp diesel engine. It also names LE, LS and LX variants, but the readable sheet does not map each steering arrangement to a particular trim. A Dost XL description therefore needs more detail than the model badge alone.
| Specification | Official Dost XL listing |
|---|---|
| Steering | Manual and power steering both available |
| Trim labels | LE, LS, LX |
| Additional configuration labels | CBC, FSD, HSD |
| Engine | 1.5-litre, three-cylinder BS VI diesel |
| Power | 70 hp at 3,300 rpm |
| Torque | 170 Nm at 1,600 to 2,400 rpm |
| Wheelbase | 2,350 mm |
| Rated payload | 1,400 kg |
A model-wide choice is not a trim-by-trim promise
The published wording establishes that steering alternatives exist in the Dost XL offering. It does not establish that every listed trim can be ordered with either system, or that the equipment of a vehicle already in a fleet can be identified from its colour. That requires the specification of the particular vehicle.
In a fleet register, the steering type deserves its own entry. If vehicles are allocated between drivers, a generic Dost XL entry can conceal a difference in controls. Recording the fitted system is more precise than relying on what another truck carrying the same badge happens to have.
Ashok Leyland's product page shows Stable Grey and Irish Cream colour labels. These identify finishes displayed for the model, not an equipment code. Neither colour provides a verified shortcut to the trim, body configuration or steering arrangement in the public information reviewed here.
The diesel specification stays separate
The engine's maximum power and torque are quoted at different engine speeds. That information describes the drivetrain and belongs beside the steering entry, rather than being used to infer which steering system is fitted. Power output and steering assistance answer different questions about the vehicle.
The specification sheet lists a mechanically operated, single dry-plate diaphragm clutch. Front and rear suspension are described as parabolic leaf springs with double-acting shock absorbers. These are additional mechanical details that help distinguish the published Dost XL specification from a loose description of the wider Dost family.
None of those entries supplies a measured steering-effort figure, a comparison of driver fatigue or a fuel saving between the steering alternatives. The official sheet does not publish those tests. This guide consequently does not assign a numerical advantage to one arrangement or claim identical behaviour under every load.
Trim and body labels need their own columns
The variant field places LE, LS and LX beside CBC, FSD and HSD labels. A clear vehicle record should preserve the complete designation supplied with the truck. Combining all of those labels into an invented hierarchy would suggest an equipment matrix that the readable page does not actually provide.
This matters when a workshop, insurer or fleet office is matching a description to a specific vehicle. A shortened model name may be adequate in conversation, but it does not capture every configuration detail. The vehicle's documentation and fitted equipment can settle points that a model-wide web page leaves open.
The product page advertises a loading area of 4.28 square metres, while the specification sheet states a rated payload of 1,400 kg. These describe cargo capability, rather than steering equipment. The load figure cannot establish whether an individual Dost XL has the manual or assisted system.
Keep related models distinct
The model name in this guide is Dost XL. It should remain attached to the figures when information is shared with a driver or entered into a maintenance file. A specification quoted for another Dost derivative cannot automatically fill a missing field on the XL's record.

Those articles address different ranges or questions rather than filling the missing steering-to-trim mapping here.
