NEW DELHI: The Maruti Suzuki Jimny has an official ground clearance of 210 mm, measured unladen. Its brochure also lists a 36-degree approach angle, 46-degree departure angle and 24-degree ramp breakover angle. Those figures describe different obstacles, while the ALLGRIP PRO system and low-range transfer gear address how the vehicle delivers drive on difficult ground.

Clearance is only one part of the picture
The unladen qualification belongs with the clearance number whenever it is quoted. It identifies the measurement condition, rather than promising the same gap beneath every part of the car in every situation. People, luggage, tyre condition and the shape of the obstacle all belong in a real journey assessment. A brochure figure cannot establish whether an unfamiliar track is passable.
Approach angle concerns the front of the vehicle as it meets a slope. Departure angle concerns the rear as the vehicle leaves it. Ramp breakover describes the geometry of crossing a crest between the axles. Reading these separately explains why a tall-looking vehicle can still meet an obstacle with its bumper or underside.
The Jimny's uneven set of angles is therefore useful information. Its larger departure figure is not a second clearance measurement, and the breakover figure is not a gradient limit. None is a substitute for checking the actual surface. Combining the numbers into a single claim that the car can climb any similarly angled slope would misread the specification.
What ALLGRIP PRO contributes
NEXA describes selectable 2H, 4H and 4L positions and identifies 4L as the low-range setting. This is a mechanical capability separate from ground clearance. The product page presents low range as a way to provide torque and traction in demanding terrain. The owner's manual remains the reference for the conditions and procedure for changing modes.
That distinction is particularly relevant on Indian journeys where a paved approach can give way to a damaged access track. The question changes from fitting between parked cars to finding a suitable line over uneven ground. Clearance, tyre contact and controlled progress become separate considerations. The Jimny's specification provides information on each, rather than just a styling description.
The product page also describes full-width rigid axles at the front and rear, with a three-link suspension arrangement. Its explanation is that movement over an obstacle helps the opposite wheel maintain contact. The ladder-frame chassis is another part of the construction. These are the model's underlying engineering choices, distinct from the trim equipment visible in a showroom photograph.
Zeta and Alpha retain the same basic purpose
The official brochure lists Zeta and Alpha with manual and automatic transmission choices. It specifies a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic, alongside a 1,462 cc K15B petrol engine. The transmission choice does not remove the low-range transfer gear from the stated drive-system specification. A convenience choice and an off-road feature should therefore be checked separately.
Trim differences include steel wheels for Zeta and alloy wheels for Alpha in the brochure. Alpha also lists LED headlamps, headlamp washers and automatic climate control. These distinctions explain the equipment hierarchy, but they do not turn the clearance figure into a benefit reserved for the more expensive grade. The key is to read the technical and equipment tables together.
The cabin adds a practical constraint to this discussion: Jimny is officially a four-seater. A family planning a trip needs to account for its actual passenger places before considering rough-road hardware. A compact off-road vehicle and a family SUV can answer different transport needs even when both are described as SUVs.
Use the figures for the question they answer
Our Jimny price guide covers the separate variant-cost question. For context on other Maruti SUV ranges, the Brezza variant guide and Grand Vitara variant guide describe their respective line-ups.
