Alpha: Alpha manual Rs 13,45,700 and Alpha automatic Rs 14,51,700. With the dual-tone roof the Alpha manual costs Rs 13,61,100 and the Alpha automatic Rs 14,67,100.

What the price gaps mean

The automatic gearbox adds Rs 1,06,000 on the Zeta and Rs 1,06,000 on the Alpha. The Alpha trim adds Rs 86,700 over the Zeta on the manual and Rs 86,700 on the automatic. The dual-tone roof is the smallest extra, at Rs 15,400 on the manual and Rs 15,400 on the automatic.

The gap between the cheapest and the dearest Jimny is Rs 2,08,100. A buyer who wants the automatic but not the Alpha trim pays Rs 13,65,000, which is Rs 1,06,000 above the entry car.

Engine, drivetrain and safety

All four versions use a 1,462 cc petrol engine and carry the ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer gear, according to Maruti's variant data. The Jimny seats four, not five, and the data lists six airbags on every version.

Listed fuel efficiency is 16.94 km/l for the manual and 16.39 km/l for the automatic. These are the numbers on Maruti's page and a real off-road or hill drive will return less.

Jimny against the Thar

The Jimny's closest rival on price and purpose is the Mahindra Thar. Our Thar price list runs from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh, so the Jimny Zeta at Rs 12,59,000 sits above the Thar's entry price and below its top. The larger Thar Roxx starts at Rs 12.52 lakh.

The Jimny is a four-seater with a shorter body, while the Roxx is the five-door Thar. Buyers should compare seating, boot space and the transfer-case controls in person on a test drive before choosing.

Quick answers for buyers

What is the cheapest Jimny? The Zeta manual at Rs 12,59,000 ex-showroom Delhi.

Does the Jimny come in a diesel? No. Maruti's price list shows only the 1,462 cc petrol engine, with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

How many people does it seat? Four. Maruti's variant data lists a seating capacity of four on every version.

How much fuel does it need? At the listed 16.94 km/l, 1,000 km needs about 59 litres of petrol. At the listed 16.39 km/l for the automatic, it needs about 61 litres.

Where is the Jimny sold? The price list sits on Maruti's Nexa site, so bookings and test drives go through Nexa showrooms and not Arena outlets.

The price spread at a glance

The dearest Jimny costs Rs 2,08,100 more than the cheapest, a spread of about 17 per cent. Only four versions are on offer, so the choice comes down to two questions: manual or automatic, and Zeta or Alpha.

The Jimny is priced as a lifestyle and off-road purchase rather than a family car. Buyers who plan to use it mainly in the city should weigh the four-seat layout and the listed 16 km/l class mileage against five-seat compact SUVs that cost less.

On-road prices will be higher than the ex-showroom figures because registration, road tax and insurance are added and vary by state. Ask the Nexa dealer for an itemised quote and a written delivery date before paying a booking amount. The full table is on Maruti's official Jimny price page.
