NEW DELHI: The Maruti Suzuki XL6 pairs its petrol Smart Hybrid engine with either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, while the Zeta CNG uses a five-speed manual. Read the fuel and transmission suffix before the trim name: an XL6 Zeta AT and an XL6 Zeta CNG answer different needs despite sharing the Zeta badge.

Separate the gearbox from the equipment grade

Start by making a small grid with fuel, gearbox and equipment in separate columns. This prevents a common showroom misunderstanding: treating Alpha as a mechanical specification or assuming Zeta always describes the same powertrain. The complete name is what needs to appear on the quotation, especially if different family members are comparing different cars.

Our existing Ertiga and XL6 price guide deals with the monetary ladder. The useful question here is how to read that ladder before assigning a value to a gearbox or a comfort feature. A higher equipment grade cannot substitute for the transmission you intended to order.

The official brochure identifies the petrol engine as a 1,462 cc K15C Smart Hybrid. Its petrol column lists 75.8 kW at 6,000 rpm and 139 Nm at 4,300 rpm. It separately identifies the CNG engine as K15C and gives mode-specific output figures. That is a reason to use the correct fuel column when comparing specifications.

Build the test drive around the regular driver

For a manual demonstration, ask to experience the sort of junctions and low-speed manoeuvres the regular driver encounters. Check whether the driving position remains comfortable while using the pedals and gear lever. A short run on an empty straight road can leave the most relevant part of a daily commute unexplored.

For the automatic, first assess ordinary driving with the transmission doing its own work. Then ask for a demonstration of the steering-mounted paddles described on the official page. Learn their operation from the vehicle manual and the demonstrator while stationary before trying them in suitable conditions. Paddle availability is a feature to understand, rather than a reason to rush the drive.

Keep observations specific: ease of manoeuvring into your parking space, response at the speeds you normally use and the confidence of each regular driver. Our Maruti automatic range guide gives wider context, but the XL6 demonstration should concern the actual gearbox and vehicle being quoted.

Keep the six-seat cabin in the decision

The XL6 brochure specifies captain seats in the second row and a split, reclining third row. This makes the family's seating plan particularly relevant. Work out who will occupy the rear seats on a normal trip and who will enter and leave most often. The driver should not be the only person assessing a people mover.

Try the preferred seating positions with the intended passengers present. Check access to the third row after the middle-row occupants have made themselves comfortable. Then look at where everyday bags will go. Assessing a spacious-looking cabin while every seat is pushed forward can give a misleading impression of how the family will actually travel.

Verify comfort equipment independently

The brochure places ventilated front seats in the Alpha+ column. It also distinguishes equipment such as the camera and infotainment system by grade. Use those columns after settling fuel and gearbox. A promotional photograph of a fully equipped XL6 cannot establish which features belong to the particular version in your quotation. For example, check the camera view and seat-ventilation controls on the demonstrator, then match those observations to the brochure column for the quoted grade.

For the CNG option, include filling convenience and your luggage arrangement in the inspection. The Maruti CNG range guide provides broader context. Record any promised equipment against the complete variant name, and keep a copy of the relevant official specification with the order paperwork.
