Under Rs 6 lakh, buyers can choose from the S-Presso (Rs 4,64,400), Alto K10 (Rs 4,84,400), WagonR LXi (Rs 5,93,900) and Celerio VXi (Rs 5,97,900). The Celerio claims the best figure of the small cars at 34.43 km/kg.

CNG costs Rs 79,500 to Rs 95,000 more than the matching petrol manual on the hatchbacks and Dzire. The Celerio VXi CNG carries the smallest premium at Rs 79,500, and the WagonR LXi CNG the largest at Rs 95,000. On the Swift VXi and Dzire VXi the gap is Rs 89,500 and Rs 91,000 respectively.

CNG with an automatic gearbox

Three models pair CNG with Maruti's AGS automated manual. The Swift VXi CNG AGS is the cheapest at Rs 7,92,400, followed by the Baleno Delta CNG + AGS at Rs 8,32,400 and the Dzire VXi CNG AGS at Rs 8,53,100. On each, the AGS adds Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 over the CNG manual.

The Dzire CNG AGS also carries the highest claimed efficiency in the whole range at 36.47 km/kg, ahead of the Dzire CNG manual at 35.63 km/kg. Our Dzire version-wise prices shows where these sit in the sedan's line-up.

Bigger CNG cars: Brezza, Ertiga, XL6 and the SUVs

For families who need space, the Ertiga VXi CNG at Rs 10,93,800 is the cheapest seven-seat CNG car in this list, while the XL6 Zeta CNG costs Rs 12,60,800. The Brezza offers CNG on three trims from Rs 9,39,900, with a six-speed manual.

The two midsize SUVs show a clear split. The Victoris LXI CNG starts at Rs 11,54,900, which is Rs 1,49,800 below the cheapest Grand Vitara CNG, the Delta at Rs 13,04,700. At the top, the Grand Vitara Zeta CNG (Rs 14,65,000) and Victoris ZXI CNG (Rs 14,66,900) are within Rs 2,000 of each other.

What the numbers leave out

Claimed efficiency is a test figure, so real running costs depend on traffic, load and the local gas price. CNG rates are set by city gas distributors and change from time to time, as the August CNG price increase in Gurugram showed. Factory CNG cars also give up some boot space to the cylinder, which matters most on the hatchbacks.

Insurance, registration and any accessories push the on-road price above these figures, and the amounts vary by state. For the most popular CNG car in this list, our WagonR price list sets out every petrol and CNG version side by side.
