Lower trims: under Rs 40,000 apart

From the base cars to the third trim, the Baleno costs between Rs 15,000 and Rs 38,000 more than the matching Swift. The cheapest automatic Swift, the VXi AMT at Rs 7,12,900, is Rs 37,000 below the cheapest automatic Baleno, the Delta AGS at Rs 7,49,900. Maruti also lists a Swift VXi (O) at Rs 6,93,900 manual and Rs 7,38,900 AMT, a step the Baleno does not have.

CNG: Baleno claims more, costs more

The Swift VXi CNG costs Rs 7,57,400 and the Baleno Delta CNG Rs 7,92,400. Maruti claims 32.85 km/kg for the Swift and 33.61 km/kg for the Baleno. Both also offer CNG with an AMT: the Swift VXi CNG AGS at Rs 7,92,400 and the Baleno Delta CNG + AGS at Rs 8,32,400, which Maruti rates at 34.47 km/kg. The top CNG Swift, the ZXI CNG AGS, costs Rs 8,86,400.

Mileage: Swift ahead on petrol

On petrol, the Swift's claimed figures are higher: 24.80 km/l for the manual against 23.80 km/l for the Baleno, and 25.75 km/l for the AMT against 24.77 km/l. On CNG the order flips and the Baleno claims about 0.8 km/kg more. Maruti's data does not list a figure for the Swift CNG AGS versions. Claimed numbers come from standard tests, and real-world mileage in city traffic will be lower for both.

Top trims: the gap widens

The Swift ZXi+ costs Rs 8,28,900 as a manual and Rs 8,73,900 as an AMT. The Baleno has two top trims, Alpha at Rs 9,09,900 manual and Rs 9,59,900 AGS, and Alpha (O) at Rs 9,49,900 and Rs 9,99,000. Between the two flagships the difference is Rs 1,25,100.

If your budget is fixed near Rs 8.3 lakh, the choice is between a top Swift and a mid-level Baleno Zeta or Delta CNG + AGS. Ex-showroom prices exclude registration and insurance, so take the on-road quote in writing.
