The Swift has a few versions the Dzire does not. Maruti sells VXi (O) manual, AMT, CNG and CNG AGS versions of the hatchback, priced from Rs 6,93,900 to Rs 8,18,400. The Swift ZXi+ also comes in dual-tone paint, with the AMT at Rs 8,88,900.
Within each car, the cost of moving up a step is the same. An AMT adds Rs 45,000 over the manual on both the Swift and the Dzire. CNG adds Rs 89,500 on the Swift VXi and Rs 91,000 on the Dzire VXi, and the CNG AGS adds a further Rs 35,000 on both.
The dearest Dzire is the ZXi CNG AGS at Rs 9,53,700, which is also the only Dzire above Rs 9.5 lakh. The dearest Swift on single-tone paint is the ZXi CNG AGS at Rs 8,86,400.
Paint can change the sum too. Maruti charges Rs 15,000 extra for dual-tone paint on the Swift ZXi+ manual and AMT, while the Dzire price list shows no separate dual-tone price on any version.
Which is more fuel efficient on paper
Maruti's own claimed figures favour the sedan. The Dzire manual claims 25.15km/l against 24.80 km/l for the Swift manual, and the Dzire AMT claims 26.13km/l against 25.75 km/l for the Swift AMT.
The gap is wider on CNG. The Dzire VXi CNG claims 35.63km/kg, while the Swift VXi CNG claims 32.85 km/kg. The Dzire CNG AGS claims 36.47km/kg, the best figure in Maruti's range. Maruti's data does not list a claimed figure for the Swift CNG AGS yet.
What the gap means at the top of the range
The Dzire's premium buys a sedan body with a separate boot, and on paper a slightly better claimed efficiency in every fuel and gearbox pairing listed. The Swift, for its part, offers more versions to choose from in the middle of the range, thanks to the VXi (O) trims.
At the top, the Dzire ZXi+ AMT at Rs 9,41,300 still sits below Rs 10 lakh ex-showroom. The Swift ZXi+ AMT costs Rs 8,73,900. If you are stretching to the top Swift, the Baleno price list is worth a look too, since the Baleno Delta AGS costs Rs 7,49,900.
