NEW DELHI: The BMW X5 xDrive40i petrol starts at Rs 96,90,000, against Rs 1,34,90,000 for the BMW X7 xDrive40i petrol, according to BMW India's model directory. The product pages repeat those respective starting figures. This comparison covers the petrol models, not the lowest price across every fuel type. Price as of 26 October 2026, 23:25 IST.

The more expensive SUV is not the quicker one here

The published acceleration figures make a useful distinction. BMW's X5 technical release gives the xDrive40i a quicker run to 100 km/h than the X7 product page quotes for its xDrive40i. Both carry the same stated horsepower figure. Moving up the price ladder therefore does not automatically bring a quicker sprint in this pairing.

The X5 release identifies a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. It also describes electrical assistance from a 48V system. These are specifications of the petrol powertrain, so the presence of electrical assistance should not be confused with the model being a battery-electric SUV.

For the X7, BMW likewise identifies a TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine. The product page quotes 540 Nm of maximum torque and a top speed of 250 km/h. These manufacturer figures describe capability under their stated test conditions; this article does not claim to have independently reproduced them.

How the X5 uses its equipment

BMW's release for the updated X5 describes adaptive air suspension on both axles as standard across the variants introduced in that update. It also identifies electrically adjustable Comfort Seats with lumbar support. That matters because an entry price alone can suggest less about the cabin than the actual equipment description does.

The same update introduced an xOffroad package with modes named xSand, xRocks, xGravel and xSnow. BMW says the selected mode coordinates ride height, the all-wheel-drive system and powertrain responses. Reinforced underbody protection is also described. Those provisions are relevant to varying surfaces, but they are not a guarantee that any particular route is passable.

The current X5 product page highlights a folding rear bench, a panoramic glass roof and four-zone climate control. Its cabin presentation also includes a curved display and ambient lighting. Together, these features explain why the X5 is more than simply the cheaper row in the table: its own specification already addresses passenger comfort and luggage flexibility.

The X7 puts more emphasis on its rear cabin

The X7 page describes a vehicle around 5.18 metres long and presents a six-seat cabin layout. In that layout, the separate second-row seating is intended to make access to the third row easier. The exact seating configuration remains an important part of a vehicle specification rather than something to infer from an exterior photograph.

Its climate system is described as offering five-zone control across the seating rows. BMW also highlights a panoramic glass sunroof and flexible seating arrangements. For a household regularly using the rear of the cabin, the arrangement of passengers and their individual comfort controls can be more consequential than the small difference in the quoted acceleration times.

Both official product presentations include Harman Kardon audio and BMW's digital-key functionality. The equipment theme is consequently not a simple division between a connected X7 and a basic X5. The more useful distinction is how the cabin and passenger space are organised, alongside the features specified for the chosen version.

Starting prices, with their limits kept visible

The figures in this article are expressly labelled starting prices. They do not establish the price of every M Sport Pro configuration or optional finish. BMW's current model directory supplies the price comparison; its earlier X5 technical release supplies engineering background. Historical launch prices in that release have not been substituted for the current website figures.

BMW says its ex-showroom figures include applicable GST but exclude road tax, TCS, registration-related charges, insurance and other listed levies. It also says the price applicable at invoicing governs. Neither starting amount should therefore be read as a complete on-road quotation for an individually configured car.
