NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara's ALLGRIP SELECT system has four driving modes: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. Nexa lists the ALLGRIP powertrain under Alpha and Alpha (O). The mode names describe different ways of managing traction and driving response, so a buyer should check the selected powertrain rather than assume every Grand Vitara with an Alpha badge has this system.
| ALLGRIP setting | Purpose described in the Indian brochure |
|---|---|
| Auto | Prioritises fuel economy, switching between two-wheel and four-wheel drive as conditions require |
| Sport | Optimises the vehicle for sporty driving, including winding roads |
| Snow | Supports stability on snow, unpaved and other slippery surfaces |
| Lock | Directs power towards wheels with traction and brakes a spinning wheel to help in difficult terrain |
Start with the powertrain line
The Indian Grand Vitara page groups the range by powertrain. ALLGRIP SELECT appears as a distinct category, alongside petrol and strong hybrid descriptions. Alpha names appear in more than one part of the range, making the full configuration more informative than the trim badge on its own.
That is the model-specific complication when comparing two Grand Vitara quotations. A similar trim label does not settle which driven-wheel system or hybrid arrangement is being supplied. Ask for the full powertrain description on the quotation, then match it with the vehicle and its controls during inspection. A sunroof or a familiar badge is not sufficient identification.
Auto is the everyday reference setting
The Indian brochure says Auto prioritises economy and changes between two-wheel and four-wheel drive according to the surface and driving conditions. The useful distinction is that the system manages the driven-wheel arrangement, rather than requiring the driver to treat every ordinary road as a special terrain exercise.
For a showroom demonstration, ask to see the selector and the corresponding indication in the car. Understanding how the chosen mode is displayed is more useful than simply knowing the names. Follow the owner's instructions for operating the selector; a feature description is not a substitute for that procedure.
Sport and Snow answer different questions
Sport is described around driving response on roads such as winding routes. Snow is described around stability and traction on snow, loose or slippery surfaces. The latter name should not be read as relevant only to a winter holiday: the Indian brochure expressly includes unpaved and other slippery surfaces in its explanation.
The distinction can help a buyer explain their use case accurately. Someone who regularly reaches a property over a loose approach road is asking a different question from someone interested in the response on a winding paved road. Describe that actual route during the demonstration rather than asking whether an SUV is simply good off road.
What Lock means in this brochure
For Lock, Maruti describes sending power to wheels that have traction while applying the brakes to a spinning wheel. It places this setting in the context of getting through difficult terrain such as mud or sand. That is a specific description of the system's intervention, rather than an invitation to assume the car has every kind of mechanical locking hardware.
Do not extend the name into capabilities that the Indian specification does not establish. A mode label alone does not define the depth of a water crossing, the condition of a trail or whether a particular obstacle is suitable. Those questions require the vehicle's operating limits and an assessment of the route itself.
Who it is for
ALLGRIP deserves closer examination by a Grand Vitara buyer whose normal use includes surfaces where extra traction is relevant. Start by identifying those journeys and how frequently they occur. If the main requirement is a particular cabin feature or the strong hybrid driving experience, verify that separate requirement against the chosen configuration rather than assuming the powertrains are interchangeable.
The most useful inspection is therefore a comparison of complete configurations. Note the trim, powertrain and the controls present in the demonstrated car. Ask for the matching specification sheet and operating guide. This keeps the discussion tied to the vehicle being considered, instead of combining highlights from several versions into an imaginary single variant.
