NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki lists Celerio S-CNG fuel efficiency at 34.43 km/kg and describes its gas cylinder capacity as 60 litres, water equivalent. These figures measure different things. They cannot be multiplied together to establish the distance available from a CNG fill, and the cylinder description is not a claim that it holds that quantity of gas in kilograms.

Why the capacity unit changes the calculation

The distinction is visible in Maruti's own wording: economy is stated per kilogram, while cylinder capacity uses a water-equivalent volume. To calculate distance from a fuel quantity, that quantity must match the unit in the consumption figure. A volume label for a cylinder is not the same input as the mass of gas recorded on a filling receipt.

For a Celerio owner trying to plan refuelling, the useful record is the actual gas dispensed and the distance travelled. Keep the receipt rather than converting the cylinder's volume label into an assumed fuel load. The official specifications do not provide a fixed kilogram fill here, so this article does not attach a claimed full-cylinder range to them.

That matters because a full-cylinder range can sound more definite than the underlying information permits. The Celerio's advertised efficiency is a reference figure, while a particular fill and a particular journey are observations. Keeping those separate makes it easier to spot whether a surprising result came from the calculation, the amount filled or a change in the driving pattern.

Match the CNG figure to the CNG variant

The current official variant card identifies the gas version as Celerio VXi CNG, with a manual gearbox and a 998 cc engine. An AGS petrol car elsewhere in the range should not be treated as an automatic version of that CNG configuration. The fuel type and transmission need to appear together when comparing quotations or reading a feature list.

Maruti's Celerio overview also discusses petrol manual and Auto Gear Shift choices. That makes a model-wide headline about automatic convenience easy to misread if the intended purchase is the gas version. Begin with the exact variant card, then check the matching specification rather than combining separate highlights from the range.

Build a useful fuel record

Record the odometer reading when gas is filled, retain the dispensed quantity and note any petrol used before the next measurement. A calculation that attributes all distance to CNG while omitting petrol consumption will not represent the complete fuel bill. This is particularly relevant when switching between the fuels during the period being measured.

For an expense comparison, divide the local price per kilogram of CNG by the expected kilometres per kilogram. Use the same approach separately for petrol with its own price and consumption unit. The result is a cost-per-distance estimate. Do not use the difference between the advertised mileage numbers as a percentage reduction in the household fuel budget.

There is no universal saving quoted here because the necessary inputs belong to the owner. Refuelling access, the route and the amount of petrol used can change the operating picture. Write down those assumptions before comparing a gas car with a petrol alternative, and revisit them after a representative period of use.

Who it is for

The Celerio S-CNG is relevant to a driver comfortable with a manual gearbox who can incorporate CNG refuelling into regular travel. Someone whose main requirement is an automatic should examine the petrol AGS versions as a different configuration. The test-drive question is whether the chosen fuel and gearbox suit the actual routine, rather than which headline mileage number is largest.

At a vehicle inspection, try the luggage normally carried and check the space around the installed CNG equipment. Do not assign the petrol model's general luggage description to the gas version without checking it. The useful outcome is a clear view of the particular car, its fuel documentation and how it fits a normal day.
