NEW DELHI: iPad Pro M5 owners can turn on an 80% charging limit in Settings, Battery, Battery Health. Apple's current iPad guide also provides a temporary override: choose Allow Until Tomorrow and the 80% limit returns at 6:00am. Occasional charging to 100% can still happen with the limit enabled, helping the tablet keep its battery-percentage estimate accurate.

Set the limit for a desk routine
Open Settings on the iPad itself, select Battery, enter Battery Health and enable 80% Limit. Apple describes the feature as particularly useful when a tablet is charged frequently or stays connected for long periods. Its supported-device guidance includes iPad Pro M4 and later, covering the M5 generation without requiring a particular storage capacity.
The M5 Pro is available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, each with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options. Those are hardware choices. The charging control is a battery setting, so an owner should look for it in Battery Health rather than in the menus for the display, attached keyboard or external storage.
That distinction matters for a tablet used as a small workstation. Apple's product page shows the M5 model running several app windows while attached to Magic Keyboard. A desk routine can involve long periods near power even when the owner originally chose an iPad for portability. The limit offers a way to manage that routine without repeatedly watching the percentage and unplugging by hand.
Choose between a temporary and lasting override
Before a day away from the desk, return to Battery Health and turn off 80% Limit. The current guide describes two choices: Allow Until Tomorrow for a temporary change, or Set Limit to 100% to retain the higher setting until it is changed again. Read that choice before confirming, especially if the intention is to restore the usual desk routine automatically.
The temporary option brings the limit back at 6:00am. Consider when the tablet will leave home in relation to that reset. For example, someone preparing for an early train journey and someone charging after breakfast may need to review the setting at different times. This is a planning implication of the documented reset time, rather than a promise about how quickly a particular charger will fill the battery.
Apple also describes a Charge to 100% control in Battery settings when a full charge is needed sooner than scheduled. That provides another route for an immediate exception. The practical check afterwards is simple: review whether the tablet is using the regular limit or a lasting 100% setting, rather than assuming every full-charge action has the same duration.
A full battery does not necessarily mean a failed limit
The guide explicitly says an iPad may occasionally reach 100% while the limit remains enabled. The reason is to keep the battery-percentage display accurate; this may happen more often if the device cannot regularly complete a full charge. Seeing a full reading once is therefore insufficient evidence that the switch has stopped working.
There is also a distinction between today's charge level and battery health. An 80% daily limit describes how far charging is allowed to proceed. It does not mean the battery has already lost capacity, nor does enabling it restore capacity lost through ageing. Avoid treating the percentage beside the battery icon as a diagnosis of long-term condition.
Apple's battery-care page identifies temperature history and charging patterns as contributors to chemical ageing. For an Indian user moving between an air-conditioned office and a hot outdoor commute, charging settings should be considered alongside the conditions in which the tablet is used. The company does not promise a fixed number of extra months of battery life from enabling this switch.
