NEW DELHI: Owners of the iPad Air with M2 can enable Apple's 80% charging limit through Settings, Battery and Battery Health. The setting is intended to reduce battery wear when the tablet spends long periods connected to power. An occasional charge to 100% can still be normal, even when the limit remains switched on.

Start with the model, then change the setting

Apple explicitly includes the M2 iPad Air in its supported battery-health models. Do not identify the tablet only by its screen size or the colour of its case. Those descriptions can apply to different generations. Confirm that the device is an M2 Air before following a guide written for it.

Open Settings, select Battery, and enter Battery Health. Switch on 80% Limit. There is no need to discharge the tablet first or wait for an empty-battery warning. The practical check is whether the limit is enabled in that menu, rather than whether the percentage happens to stop at precisely the same point every time.

Apple's current user guide also describes an option to charge to full from the Battery screen. Follow the options displayed on your installed software when you need extra charge. A journey away from sockets and an ordinary evening beside a desk are different situations; the useful setting is one you can change as your day changes.

Understand what an occasional full charge means

A tablet reaching full charge once does not by itself establish that the limit has failed. Apple says these occasional full charges maintain the accuracy of the battery's charge estimate. Check the setting before assuming that a charger, cable or software update needs replacing.

Keep charge level separate from battery condition. Apple's Battery Health page can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacturing date and first use. That gives an owner a better record than a photograph of the charging percentage alone. Note which reading you are discussing if you later ask for service support.

A charge cycle measures cumulative battery use, rather than the number of times a cable has been plugged in. Apple defines it by use equivalent to the battery's full capacity, with an adjustment for expected capacity loss over time. Brief top-ups therefore should not be counted as separate complete cycles simply because they involved separate charging sessions.

Why this is especially relevant to the M2 Air

The M2 Air came in two display sizes and moved its front camera to the landscape edge. Apple also specified support for Pencil Pro, the USB-C Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. That combination makes a desk-based pattern plausible: video calls, handwritten notes and document work, with the tablet repeatedly returning to a charger.

For that particular use pattern, a charging limit offers a deliberate stopping point while power is readily available. The trade-off is less charge available when the tablet leaves the desk. A student taking it between classes should judge the setting against that day's access to power, rather than treating a lower charging target as a promise of longer running time.

Heat needs a separate check

Apple advises avoiding use or charging above an ambient temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. It also says temperature protections can restrict charging beyond the same percentage as the user-selected limit. In an Indian room without cooling, checking where the tablet is charging can be as relevant as checking its Battery Health menu.
