The CMAT examination pattern in NTA's 2026 bulletin has 100 questions across five sections, with 400 marks available and a duration of 180 minutes. Each section contains 20 questions worth 80 marks. A correct response earns four marks, an incorrect response loses one mark and an unanswered question earns zero.
The paper is in English and uses a computer-based format. This guide explains the official CMAT 2026 information bulletin, which was linked from the examination's home page when checked on 2 November 2026. Readers searching for CMAT 2027 should confirm that edition's rules separately before using this pattern as a final examination specification.
| Section | Questions | Maximum marks |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 20 | 80 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 |
| Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 |
| General Awareness | 20 | 80 |
| Innovation and Entrepreneurship | 20 | 80 |
| Total | 100 | 400 |
CMAT exam pattern: five sections and three hours
The five-section structure gives Innovation and Entrepreneurship the same maximum marks as Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation. It also gives General Awareness an equal share. A preparation plan built only around mathematics, reasoning and English would therefore leave two of the five published sections outside its coverage.
Each section contributes one-fifth of the maximum score. That is a statement about the test's structure, rather than a claim that every section will feel equally difficult to every candidate. Use practice performance to identify weak areas while retaining all five sections in the study plan.
The 180-minute duration is the overall examination duration stated in the bulletin. Dividing it by 100 gives a simple average of 1.8 minutes per question, but that arithmetic is a planning reference, not an official time allowance for every individual question. A short factual question and a calculation-heavy question may need different amounts of attention.
CMAT negative marking and score calculation
For ordinary questions, multiply correct answers by four and subtract the number of incorrect answers. As an illustration, 60 correct responses and 30 incorrect responses, with ten unanswered, produce 210 marks: 240 for the correct responses minus 30 for the incorrect ones. This is a worked example, not a predicted qualifying score.
The bulletin also explains how exceptional answer-key cases are handled. If a question is dropped because of a technical error, it provides for full marks to all candidates. Where the final answer key changes or accepts multiple options, the applicable scoring follows the bulletin's revised-key provisions. A self-calculated score should therefore use the final official key.
Raw marks and an institution's admission cutoff answer different questions. The first records examination performance under the scoring scheme. The second is a requirement set by a participating institution. There is no single admission outcome that can be inferred merely from the worked example above.
Who can take CMAT under the 2026 rules?
The 2026 bulletin requires a bachelor's degree in any discipline and Indian citizenship. It also permits final-year bachelor's students whose results will be declared before admission begins for the 2026-27 academic year. It states that there is no age restriction for appearing in that edition.
These are examination eligibility conditions. A management institute can have additional admission requirements, so a candidate should read the institute's programme criteria as well. Someone planning a later application cycle should check the relevant final-year result condition again rather than carrying the 2026-27 academic-year wording into another year.
Does a CMAT score automatically get an MBA seat?
No. NTA's bulletin says candidates must apply separately to the participating institutions they want, using their CMAT score. Each institution sets its applicable cutoff and selection process. That process may include a group discussion and personal interview. NTA does not conduct counselling for admission to management programmes.
Before applying to a college, record its programme name, accepted examination edition, application deadline and selection stages. The official CMAT portal establishes the examination rules; the institute's official admission page establishes what that institute requires. A test registration should not be mistaken for a completed college application.
