For JEE Main 2027, candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, and those appearing in 2027, can take the examination. NTA has set no age limit for appearing. The important qualification is that an improvement examination does not reset the year in which a student first passed Class 12.
These rules come from Chapter 3 of the official JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin, checked on 1 November 2026 at 21:39 IST. Eligibility to sit the entrance examination and eligibility for admission to a particular institution are separate checks. A successful application alone does not establish entitlement to a seat.
| Question | 2027 examination rule |
|---|---|
| Permitted Class 12 passing years | 2025 and 2026 |
| Students appearing in Class 12 | 2027 candidates are eligible to appear |
| Passed in 2024 or earlier | Not eligible for JEE Main 2027 |
| Age limit for the entrance examination | No age limit |
| Improvement examination | Does not change the first passing year |
Which passing year counts for JEE Main 2027?
NTA defines the passing year as the year in which the result was first declared as a pass in that qualifying examination. Students should therefore begin with the original passing result, rather than automatically entering the year printed on their latest improvement marksheet.
The bulletin gives a useful example. A candidate who passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology in 2025 and later passed Mathematics in 2026 is treated as having passed Class 12 in 2025. Similarly, improving marks or percentage is not treated as a new first attempt. That distinction matters particularly to repeat candidates trying to work out whether they remain inside the permitted examination years.
A candidate appearing for the Class 12 board examination in 2027 may enter the roll number, registration number or enrolment number in the relevant application field. The bulletin expressly recognises appearing candidates, so having no final Class 12 result yet does not by itself remove this route.
Are NIOS and diploma qualifications accepted?
The qualifying examination list includes the recognised 10+2 board route and the NIOS Senior Secondary examination with a minimum of five subjects. It also includes a diploma of at least three years recognised by AICTE or a state board of technical education. Candidates must read the complete list against their actual qualification instead of assuming that only one school board is recognised.
Recognition in this list answers the question of a qualifying examination for JEE Main. NTA specifically tells students to check the eligibility criteria of the institution or university where they want admission. A listed qualification should not be read as a promise that every engineering, architecture or planning programme will accept the same subject combination.
How do age and state of eligibility work?
There is no age limit for taking JEE Main 2027, but an institution may have its own age criteria. NTA's rule therefore does not remove the need to check the admission conditions of the intended college. Students should keep both decisions separate when preparing their applications and later choices.
The state code of eligibility normally follows the state where the candidate passed Class 12, rather than their native place or residence. In NTA's example, a Noida resident who takes the qualifying examination from an institution in New Delhi has Delhi as the state of eligibility. Taking an improvement examination in another state does not move that code away from the state of first passing.
For students passing or appearing through NIOS or BOSSE, the bulletin says to select the state in which the study centre is located. This is a reason to check the study centre record before filling the state field, especially if the family's residential address is elsewhere.
