JoSAA counselling requires proof of date of birth, qualifying examination records, applicable category or disability certificates, bank account details and a medical certificate. The exact list differs between IITs and IISc on one side and the NIT+ system on the other. Uploading files is only part of seat acceptance: payment and timely answers to verification queries also matter.
This checklist uses the JoSAA Business Rules dated 1 June 2026, checked on 1 November 2026 at 21:43 IST. It describes the published 2026 process for preparation and reference. Students planning a later admission cycle should replace it with that cycle's rules when issued, particularly for certificate dates and reporting deadlines.
Which documents are required for JoSAA counselling?
The lists appear on printed pages 94 and 95 of the Business Rules. A practical starting point is to put the common documents in one folder and then check the additional requirements for the system in which the seat is offered. Files should be readable, complete and consistent with the candidate's examination records.
| Document | What the 2026 lists say |
|---|---|
| Date of birth proof | Class X marksheet or certificate, Aadhaar card, or birth certificate |
| Qualifying examination | Class XII marksheet; the NIT+ list also specifies the certificate |
| Entrance examination document | The NIT+ list includes the JEE Main 2026 admit card |
| Reservation documents | Applicable category and disability certificates in the prescribed formats |
| Bank details | Crossed cheque copy or passbook image showing account details |
| Medical certificate | The specified JoSAA format |
| Other status documents | OCI, PIO, passport or citizenship documents where applicable |
The rules also list certificates for candidates with less than 40% disability who have difficulty in writing, where applicable. This is a separate requirement from the usual benchmark disability certificate. Candidates should identify the category that actually applies to them rather than uploading an unrelated form.
What are the category certificate validity rules?
For OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS candidates in the 2026 NIT+ system, the certificate must either have been issued on or after 1 April 2026, or be a government issued, online verifiable certificate valid until 31 August 2026 or the day of physical reporting, whichever is later. The alternative online verification route is part of the published rule and should not be omitted from a checklist.
For IITs and IISc, the 2026 list similarly permits an OBC-NCL or GEN-EWS certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026, or a government issued, online verifiable certificate valid at least until 21 July 2026. These are historical dates for that cycle, not a suggested validity period for 2027.
The NIT+ list includes specific state conditions. Maharashtra caste certificates require the relevant state validation, and the required caste validity certificate format is available through JoSAA. For Tamil Nadu, ST certificates must be issued by the concerned Revenue Divisional Officer. Applicants should read these conditions alongside the general category label.
JoSAA's Certificate Format page provides the medical certificate and several undertakings and category change forms. Use the document that matches the requirement. If an original certificate is not in English or Hindi, the rules require a duly certified English or Hindi version or translation during verification.
How does online document verification work?
After a seat is allocated, the candidate downloads the Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip. Clause 42 then sets out four parts of online reporting: accept the seat with an available willingness option, upload required documents not already submitted, pay the seat acceptance fee and respond to queries. All required steps must be completed within the applicable round's timeline.
The uploaded documents are verified only after the seat acceptance fee has been paid. A file showing as uploaded should therefore not be mistaken for completed verification. JoSAA can raise further queries if a replacement document still contains a discrepancy. Candidates must check the portal and successfully answer each query within the deadline.
The official JoSAA homepage says queries and supporting documents must be submitted through the portal, rather than email. A provisional seat allotment letter becomes available after successful verification and satisfaction of the eligibility conditions. The admitting institute subsequently checks documents physically and completes its own admission formalities.
