JoSAA’s Freeze, Float and Slide options determine what happens after you accept an allotted seat. Freeze retains the seat without consideration in later rounds. Float allows consideration for higher choices across institutes. Slide restricts that consideration to higher choices within the same institute. An upgrade under Float or Slide replaces the earlier seat; it does not leave two offers available for you to choose between.

This guide uses the published JoSAA 2026 Business Rules and FAQs, checked on 29 October 2026 at 9:52 pm IST. It explains the documented rules of that cycle and does not announce a new counselling window or a 2027 schedule. Future applicants should compare these provisions with the rules issued for their own year.

What is the difference between Float and Slide in JoSAA?

The difference is the institute boundary. Under Float, the system can consider a higher preference at your current institute or another institute. Under Slide, it can consider only a higher preference within the institute already allotted. In both cases, “higher” means higher in the choice list you submitted, rather than a later judgment about which course seems better.

Consider a hypothetical candidate allotted the fifth choice on their list. The second choice is a programme at another institute and the third is a programme at the allotted institute. Float can keep both higher choices within consideration, subject to rank, eligibility and seat availability. Slide keeps the same institute choice within consideration but excludes the other institute option. Neither option guarantees an upgrade.

Clauses 48 to 52 of the official 2026 Business Rules set out these options. If there is no higher allotment in a later round, the candidate continues with the accepted seat, provided all applicable requirements have been met.

Can I return to my earlier seat after an upgrade?

No. The JoSAA 2026 FAQs state that allocation of a higher preference through Float or Slide automatically cancels the previously accepted seat. The candidate cannot return to it. The Business Rules also warn that rejecting or cancelling the upgraded seat leaves the candidate without entitlement to a seat and ends further participation in that cycle.

This makes the original preference order consequential. A course placed above your current allotment can replace it if the system upgrades you. Before submitting choices, compare programmes and institutes in the order you would actually accept them, rather than assuming you can make a fresh comparison after every result.

Can I change Freeze to Float or Slide?

Under the 2026 provisions, a candidate can move from Float to Slide or Freeze, and from Slide to Freeze, during rounds other than the last round. Once Freeze is chosen, it cannot be changed in subsequent rounds. Float and Slide are unavailable in the last round and are also unavailable to candidates allotted their first choice.

Freeze is still an acceptance decision. It does not replace the document upload, fee payment or verification requirements. Likewise, choosing Float is not a way to ignore the current allotment while waiting for the next result.

What must I do after a JoSAA seat allotment?

The official FAQs describe online reporting as acceptance with the appropriate willingness option, uploading required documents, paying the seat acceptance fee and answering verification queries within the stipulated period. Candidates should download the Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip and complete every required stage. Failure to finish online reporting can cancel the seat and prevent further participation.

For the 2026 reference cycle, the FAQ lists a seat acceptance fee of Rs 15,000 for its specified SC, ST and PwD category tags, and Rs 30,000 for other candidates. Both include Rs 5,000 in non-refundable processing charges. These are reference cycle amounts, not a fee announcement for a later year.
