Varanasi, June 21, 2026: Banaras Hindu University and IIT-BHU have both improved their positions in the QS World University Rankings 2027, giving Varanasi a stronger presence in the global higher-education conversation.

BHU Moves Into 951-1000 Band

According to QS ranking data and reports, Banaras Hindu University has moved from the 1001-1200 band in the QS 2026 rankings to the 951-1000 band in QS 2027.

The improvement is significant because BHU is one of India's largest residential universities and a major academic institution for eastern Uttar Pradesh. Reports said the university showed gains in indicators such as citations per faculty, international research network, employer reputation and sustainability.

IIT-BHU Reaches Global Rank 510

IIT-BHU also recorded a major improvement. The institute has moved up by 56 places, from rank 566 in QS 2026 to rank 510 in QS World University Rankings 2027. It also improved its national position among Indian institutions, according to institute updates and reports.

The progress comes at a time when Indian institutions are trying to improve research visibility, international collaboration, student outcomes and employer reputation. IIT-BHU's climb strengthens Varanasi's profile in engineering and technology education.

Combined Education Story for Varanasi

Seen together, the rise of BHU and IIT-BHU gives the city a wider education narrative. BHU represents a broad central university ecosystem with humanities, science, medicine, agriculture and social sciences. IIT-BHU brings engineering, technology, innovation and research strength.

This combination matters for students who look at Varanasi not only as a cultural and spiritual centre but also as a serious academic destination.

The two institutions also support different parts of the city's academic economy. BHU draws students, researchers and patients through its large campus and affiliated institutions, while IIT-BHU brings technology graduates, research projects, startups and alumni networks into the local ecosystem.

Why It Matters

Global rankings are not the only measure of quality, and they do not capture every strength of an institution. However, rankings influence student choices, international partnerships, research collaborations and employer attention.

For Varanasi, improved rankings can support the city's image as an education hub. The challenge now is to convert ranking gains into better research output, stronger labs, improved student services, global partnerships and more opportunities for local talent.

The rankings also give both institutions a clearer benchmark. Sustained progress will depend on faculty hiring, research funding, student support, international publications, industry engagement and the ability to attract scholars from outside the region.
