BHU Fills 85% of PG Seats; Offline Mop-Up Round Set for

For applicants still refreshing the Banaras Hindu University admission portal, the postgraduate cycle has reached its last meaningful window. The university says about 85 per cent of its PG seats are filled and an offline mop-up round will be held on August 7 for the vacancies that remain.

The admission exercise covers more than 6,000 seats across the main BHU campus and the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus. Four regular counselling rounds were completed first, followed by two spot rounds. The final spot phase concluded on July 23 and allowed fresh registration, bringing back candidates who had missed an earlier step or could not complete admission on time.

The upcoming mop-up is different from simply waiting for another online allotment. Candidates will be required to submit applications offline at the designated venue and within the schedule notified for the relevant course. BHU has said department-wise vacancy details and other instructions will be released separately.

That makes preparation important. Students should not travel on the strength of an old screenshot or a message forwarded in a group chat. They need to check the university’s admission portal for the latest vacancy list, reporting location, eligibility conditions and document requirements. A mop-up round moves quickly because it is designed to close seats near the end of the cycle.

At 85 per cent occupancy, a rough calculation suggests several hundred seats could still be in play across the university, although the distribution will not be even. Some high-demand courses may have no opening at all, while specialised programmes or particular categories may show vacancies after withdrawals and non-reporting.

The offline format can help departments verify documents and fill a vacant seat immediately, but it also puts pressure on applicants travelling from outside Varanasi. Clear, timely course-wise information will be essential so students do not spend money reaching campus for a seat that is not available to them.

Candidates should carry original documents along with photocopies, proof of registration and fee-payment records where applicable, while following the exact list issued by BHU. They should also keep a digital copy accessible on their phone or email. The university has not said that possession of documents alone guarantees admission; allotment will remain subject to vacancy, merit and the applicable rules.

For BHU, the mop-up round is the final clean-up of a long counselling season. For students, it may be one last opening after weeks of uncertainty. The practical advice is simple: trust the admission portal, read the course-specific notice in full and reach the correct desk before the reporting window closes.
