For most NPTEL courses, earning a certificate requires at least 40 out of 100 in the average assignment score and at least 40 out of 100 in the final proctored examination. Both conditions must be met separately. A combined score above 40 is insufficient if either component falls below its minimum. Course-specific assessment rules can differ, so the course announcement remains essential reading.

The official NPTEL FAQ explains the usual weighting as 25% for assignments and 75% for the final examination. It also identifies exceptions, including courses with non-proctored programming examinations and medical courses. Learners should therefore check the stated criteria for their selected course before treating the general formula as universal.

How are NPTEL assignment and exam marks calculated?

Under the usual formula, multiply the average assignment percentage by 0.25 and the final exam percentage by 0.75, then add the two contributions. This produces the weighted score out of 100. The separate pass conditions must be tested alongside that calculation.

For example, an average assignment score of 80 and a final examination score of 60 produce 20 assignment marks and 45 examination marks, giving a total of 65. Both original component scores are at least 40, so this example meets the general component thresholds.

Now consider 100 in assignments and 35 in the final examination. The weighted total is 25 plus 26.25, or 51.25. That total exceeds 40, but the examination component fails the separate minimum. Under the usual rule, the candidate does not qualify for the certificate. These are worked examples, not actual learner results.

The FAQ’s reference to 10 out of 25 and 30 out of 75 describes the weighted contributions at the minimum pass level. It should not be read as permission to score only 30% in the original examination. The minimum examination percentage in the standard rule is 40%.

Are NPTEL courses free with a certificate?

Enrolment and learning are free, while certification requires a separate examination process. NPTEL’s About Us page lists an optional certification examination fee of Rs 1,000 per course exam. Check the particular run’s registration notice for any applicable conditions before payment. Paying the fee registers an examination attempt; it does not remove the academic pass requirements.

NPTEL offers courses lasting four, eight or twelve weeks. Its semester information page describes certification offerings in the January to June and July to December periods. These describe the programme’s structure, not a promise that a particular course is open for enrolment today.

Who can join and how does certification work?

The general semester page states that there is no age limit or entrance eligibility condition for enrolment. A particular course may still recommend background knowledge to help learners follow the material. Review its intended audience and prerequisites as well as the assessment section.

Begin with the course listings linked on NPTEL’s official site. Choose the relevant run, read its duration and announcements, and follow the course enrolment instructions when enrolment is open. Submit the weekly assignments within their deadlines. If you want certification, follow the separately announced examination registration link, pay the required fee and attend the designated proctored examination.

The current FAQ requires an in-person examination at a centre for its general certification route. NPTEL’s About Us page says successful learners receive an electronically verifiable certificate through the candidate login, and printed hard copies are not issued. Watching lectures alone does not complete that route.

What should I check before relying on the general pass rule?

Read how the course calculates its assignment average and whether it specifies additional assessments or different passing conditions. If you need the course for academic credit, confirm your institution’s acceptance separately. A course certificate and recognition toward a degree are different administrative decisions.

For related programme coverage, read SWAYAM’s July semester examination application report, the NTA SWAYAM examination schedule and the earlier semester registration report. Follow the examination body and course named in each notice rather than transferring one programme’s dates to another.
