UGC NET eligibility depends on your qualification, marks, category and whether you are seeking Junior Research Fellowship, Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission. For the usual Master’s degree or equivalent route from a UGC recognised university or institution, General and General-EWS candidates need at least 55% without rounding off. The threshold is 50% for the specified reserved categories. A separate route exists for four year bachelor’s degree holders, but it does not confer Assistant Professor eligibility.
These conditions come from NTA’s December 2026 examination FAQs and the updated bulletin issued with the 16 October corrigendum. The distinction between academic eligibility and the result category matters: meeting the entry requirements permits you to take the examination, while the qualification awarded depends on performance and the applicable rules.
| Route or purpose | Condition |
|---|---|
| Master’s, General or General-EWS | At least 55%, without rounding off |
| Master’s, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD or Third Gender | At least 50% |
| Four year bachelor’s route | Normally 75% aggregate or equivalent grade, with eligible relaxation |
| JRF age for December 2026 | Not more than 30 years on 1 December 2026, subject to relaxation |
Can final year Master’s students apply for UGC NET?
Yes. NTA’s official December 2026 FAQs allow final year Master’s students to apply provisionally. They must subsequently complete the degree with the prescribed marks. The stated period is two years from the NET result for JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility, and one year for PhD-only qualification.
Applicants should normally choose the NET subject corresponding to their postgraduate degree. Where that subject is absent from the NET list, the bulletin permits a related subject. Check the official subject list rather than choosing only by the apparent similarity of a course name.
Are four year bachelor’s degree holders eligible?
The four year bachelor’s route normally requires at least 75% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade, with a 5% relaxation permitted for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, differently abled, EWS and other categories specified by the Commission. Candidates applying on this basis may choose the subject in which they wish to pursue a PhD. They should consult the detailed category conditions in the updated information bulletin before relying on a relaxation.
Qualifying through this route can establish eligibility for JRF and PhD admission, but not appointment as an Assistant Professor. That restriction is particularly important for graduates considering NET primarily as a route into college teaching.
What is the UGC NET JRF age limit?
For the December 2026 examination, the JRF upper age is 30 years as on 1 December 2026. Chapter 2 provides up to five years of relaxation for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, PwBD and Third Gender candidates and women applicants. Other specified grounds include research experience, an LLM degree and armed forces service, subject to their conditions. Total age relaxation is capped at five years. The cut off date belongs to this cycle; it should not be reused automatically for a later examination.
There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission. A candidate outside the ordinary JRF age limit should therefore check the other qualification routes separately instead of assuming the entire examination is unavailable.
Applicants claiming OBC-NCL status must be included in the Central List, according to NTA’s FAQs. Inclusion only in a State list does not establish the central category claim. Check the applicable certificate and category conditions before selecting a category in the form. Academic marks, category eligibility and JRF age relaxation are separate checks, so satisfying one of them does not settle the others.
What do the three UGC NET result categories mean?
Category 1 covers JRF, Assistant Professor and PhD admission; Category 2 covers Assistant Professor and PhD admission without JRF; Category 3 covers PhD admission only. Category 3 cannot be used to claim JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility. For PhD admission using Categories 2 and 3, NET marks have 70% weightage and the interview or viva has 30%; those NET marks remain valid for that admission purpose for one year from the result.
