NSP OTR registration creates the One-Time Registration identity used to access services on the National Scholarship Portal. The official FAQ says it is free on NSP and remains valid throughout a student's academic career. If you have received only a reference number, face authentication is still needed to generate the OTR. Obtaining that identity is a separate step from submitting a scholarship application.
The distinction is useful when an applicant has completed Aadhaar-based verification but cannot work out which number to use next. A reference number supports completion of the identity process. The OTR becomes the student's continuing portal identity, with scholarship applications linked to it. Neither number, by itself, is confirmation that a scholarship has been approved.
| Item | Meaning in NSP guidance |

| OTR | Continuing registration identity for the student's academic career |
| Online OTR fee | No charge on NSP |
| Scholarship deadline | Check the specific scheme separately |
What do you need for NSP OTR registration?
The official OTR FAQ, version 1.4, lists an active contact number, Aadhaar number and the number linked with Aadhaar among the required information. It also lists NPCI seeding status as desired information. That wording should not be turned into a claim that every bank-related scholarship requirement has been fulfilled during OTR creation.
For a student without Aadhaar, the FAQ describes alternatives involving the Aadhaar enrolment slip, or a parent's or legal guardian's Aadhaar when the student is a minor, with the relevant linked contact number. Read the applicable route carefully before entering another person's details. An adult applicant should not assume that the guardian arrangement described for minors applies without the stated condition.
Start from the National Scholarship Portal and select “Apply For One Time Registration (OTR)” under the student services. The official home page links to the OTR application portal. Use that route to identify the legitimate service and follow the displayed registration instructions. The portal and published FAQ were checked on 30 October 2026, 21:55 IST.
How do you turn an NSP reference number into OTR?
The FAQ explains that a reference number is assigned during the Aadhaar or guardian-Aadhaar process and is used for face authentication. It identifies two required services for its app-based route: the Aadhaar Face RD app and the NSP OTR app. Its instruction is to complete “eKYC with FaceAuth” within the NSP OTR app after those services are installed.
Successful face authentication leads to generation of the OTR. Receiving a reference number is therefore an intermediate stage, not evidence that the final identity step can be skipped. The FAQ advises proper positioning and good lighting for successful face capture. If the process fails, follow the portal's official support guidance rather than repeatedly starting new identities under slightly different personal details.
The registration being free does not mean every assisted service has the same charging arrangement. The FAQ separately describes Common Service Centre assistance and lists a combined service charge of Rs 30, inclusive of applicable taxes, for reference generation, biometric authentication, OTR generation and filing the complete application. That is the amount in the cited FAQ, rather than an online NSP registration fee.
How to recover a forgotten OTR or reference number
For a forgotten reference number, the FAQ directs applicants to the “Forgot Reference no” option and says the Aadhaar number used during e-KYC is needed for recovery. For a forgotten OTR, it describes the “Forgot OTR Number” option using the Aadhaar details from that verification process. Select the recovery route for the number you actually lost; the two identifiers serve different stages.
The FAQ also says applications are linked to the unique OTR, making it possible to retrieve associated application IDs. If personal or Aadhaar-related information changes, review the profile-update instructions. The document says Aadhaar changes require e-KYC and face authentication again. Keep your contact details current so that the identity remains usable when you next need to access an application.
Finally, check the scholarship scheme's eligibility, application window and verification requirements separately. OTR's continuing validity does not keep a closed scholarship application window open.
