The UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026 notice requires an unreserved candidate to have reached 21 years of age but not 32 on 1 August 2026. It gives the corresponding birth-date interval as 2 August 1994 to 1 August 2005, inclusive. Category-based upper-age relaxations apply under the notice. These dates belong to CSE 2026 and should not be reused as the eligibility dates for a later examination.

The reference date matters more than a candidate's age on the day they read the form. Someone checking eligibility must compare the recorded date of birth with the notification's specified interval, then apply any relaxation for which they qualify. The rules below are taken from the official 2026 notice, read on 30 October 2026, 21:54 IST.

What is the UPSC age limit for General, OBC and SC/ST candidates?

For General candidates, begin with the basic 21-to-under-32 rule on the reference date. For OBC candidates, the notice allows up to three years of upper-age relaxation when they are eligible for the applicable reservation. For SC and ST candidates, the maximum upper-age relaxation is five years. The document describes these as relaxations to the upper limit, rather than a change in the minimum age.

That distinction helps prevent a common mistake: a reserved-category applicant cannot use an upper-age relaxation to qualify below the minimum age. Equally, a category name alone does not resolve every eligibility question. The candidate must meet the notification's conditions and have the required supporting records. Read the category provisions alongside the age clause before deciding that a particular birthday qualifies.

The official CSE 2026 notification also contains specific provisions for certain defence personnel and ex-servicemen. Those clauses include service and release conditions. They should be checked in full by applicants relying on them, rather than reduced to an extra number of years without the qualifying circumstances.

Does UPSC give a separate age relaxation to women?

The age-limit clause does not list a general relaxation simply for being female. A woman candidate should check the age rule for her applicable category and any other qualifying provision. Searches such as “UPSC age limit for general female” do not establish a separate entitlement. Fee exemptions and upper-age relaxations are different provisions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For persons with benchmark disabilities, the notice provides up to ten years of upper-age relaxation for the listed disability categories. It also permits cumulative age relaxation for SC, ST or OBC candidates covered by the specified ex-servicemen or PwBD clauses. Whether a combination applies depends on the clauses and the candidate's circumstances; applicants should not add every relaxation in the notice together.

How many UPSC attempts are allowed, and what counts?

The ordinary limit is six attempts, with nine for eligible OBC candidates and unlimited attempts for SC/ST candidates within the applicable eligibility limits. For PwBD candidates, the table provides nine attempts for General, EWS and OBC candidates and unlimited attempts for SC/ST candidates. The notice also makes these provisions subject to Rule 12 of the Civil Services Rules 2026.

Appearing in the Preliminary Examination counts as an attempt at the Civil Services Examination. More specifically, actually appearing in even one prelims paper counts. A candidate should therefore not assume that missing the second paper leaves the attempt unused. The notice says that subsequent disqualification or cancellation of candidature does not erase the fact of appearance.

For your own eligibility check, make a record of the date of birth, applicable category, prior prelims appearances and the relevant notification year. Then compare age and attempts separately. Being within an age limit does not restore exhausted attempts, and having attempts left does not override the age rule. A future notification must be checked afresh for its own reference dates and restrictions.
