UPSC Civil Services candidates choose one optional subject for the Main examination and write two papers in it, each carrying 250 marks. The official list offers 25 named subjects plus literature in any one of 23 languages. Your optional therefore contributes 500 marks to the written merit total of 1,750. The choice is more specific than simply deciding whether to study humanities or science: both papers must belong to the single optional you select.

These details come from the official Civil Services Examination 2026 notice, checked on 28 October 2026. They describe that examination's rules. Candidates preparing for a later cycle should compare its own notice before submitting a form, especially the provisions governing the point at which subject and language choices become final.

What is the official UPSC optional subjects list?

The 25 named subjects are Agriculture; Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science; Anthropology; Botany; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Commerce and Accountancy; Economics; Electrical Engineering; Geography; Geology; History; Law; Management; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Medical Science; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science and International Relations; Psychology; Public Administration; Sociology; Statistics; and Zoology.

The literature choices are Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and English. Literature is a subject choice with its own syllabus and papers. It should not be confused with the qualifying Indian language paper that appears separately in the Main examination scheme.

That distinction matters when reading question paper lists. Hindi Literature Paper I and Paper II are optional papers. Hindi as a compulsory language paper serves a different purpose. The notice says marks in the qualifying language papers do not count towards ranking. The two optional papers, by contrast, are among the papers used for written merit.

How many marks does the UPSC optional carry?

The two optional papers together account for 500 of the 1,750 written merit marks. Each lasts three hours and requires written answers rather than selecting multiple choice options. The notice describes the optional syllabus broadly as honours degree level, above an ordinary bachelor's degree and below a master's degree. Engineering, Medical Science and Law correspond to bachelor's degree level.

Read both parts of a subject's syllabus before making a shortlist. A familiar subject name does not tell you how much of its detailed syllabus you already know. One practical comparison is to place the official syllabus beside the actual papers and identify which questions you can understand, which require fresh study and whether you can organise an answer within the allotted time.

UPSC's 2026 Main examination page lists optional question papers by subject, including separate Paper I and Paper II links. Open the examination page, go to the Question Paper row and choose both papers for the subject you are considering. Check the subject label carefully, particularly when a language appears as both a compulsory paper and a literature optional.

Can the optional answer medium differ from General Studies?

The notice allows candidates answering the merit papers in an Eighth Schedule language to write their optional papers in English as well, subject to the stated rules. It also says question papers other than language literature papers are set in Hindi and English. The language in which a question paper is printed and the permitted medium of your answer are separate matters.

For CSE 2026, the optional subject and relevant medium details must be supplied in the examination specific form. The notice says requests to change those details after submission will not be entertained. Do not leave the choice to a later stage on the assumption that it can be revised after the preliminary result.

A useful final check is to write down the exact subject name, locate both official syllabi, review both papers and confirm the intended answer medium against the notice.
