MUMBAI: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries reported a 36.2% decline in consolidated profit attributable to its owners for the September quarter, even as revenue from operations rose 11.9%. The October 30 financial filing puts owners' profit at ₹1,988.53 crore, against ₹3,117.95 crore a year earlier, and revenue at ₹16,198.71 crore, against ₹14,478.31 crore.
The accounts cover July to September 2026, the second quarter of FY2026-27. NSE broadcast the board outcome at 2:15:10 pm IST. The company said its board approved the unaudited standalone and consolidated results with limited-review reports. This report uses the consolidated figures, which cover the group rather than the parent company alone.
Sun Pharma's NSE quote showed ₹1,820.80 at 2:34:24 pm IST on October 30, up ₹59.80, or 3.40%, from the previous close of ₹1,761. This was an intraday price, not the day's close. The movement is reported separately from the earnings figures; it does not establish what caused the shares to rise.
Exceptional charges separate reported and adjusted profit
The consolidated statement records exceptional charges of ₹1,268.83 crore for the quarter. The notes identify ₹346.16 crore of Organon acquisition-related transaction costs and ₹922.67 crore, including legal costs, relating to a settlement agreement in US generic-pharmaceutical pricing litigation. A related tax benefit of ₹95.34 crore was recorded. These are the company's accounting disclosures, not a finding about liability.
Before exceptional items and tax, profit increased to ₹4,428.20 crore from ₹4,167.61 crore. After exceptional items, profit before tax fell to ₹3,159.37 crore. The different stages of the income statement therefore show why stronger revenue and higher pre-exceptional profit did not translate into higher reported earnings.
The accompanying presentation reports adjusted profit after tax of ₹3,162 crore, up 1.4%, against reported owners' profit of ₹1,988.53 crore. The adjusted measure removes the quarter's exceptional charge net of its related tax benefit. It should not be substituted for the lower reported figure or described as the group's unadjusted earnings.
Sales grew, but operating margin narrowed
Revenue from contracts with customers, described as sales in the presentation, was ₹16,100.01 crore, up 11.8%. Other operating revenue of ₹98.70 crore brings the financial statement's revenue-from-operations total to ₹16,198.71 crore. Keeping those two measures separate avoids comparing sales with a broader revenue figure.
The presentation lists EBITDA of ₹4,743.90 crore, compared with ₹4,527.10 crore a year earlier. Its EBITDA margin declined to 29.3% from 31.3%, a reduction of two percentage points. In the statutory accounts, total expenses rose about 14% to ₹12,287.83 crore, faster than revenue from operations.
Employee benefit expenses increased to ₹3,274.16 crore from ₹2,764.79 crore, while other expenses rose to ₹5,162.39 crore from ₹4,634.21 crore. Foreign-currency transactions produced a net gain of ₹78.46 crore, against ₹430.47 crore a year earlier. A gain is still recorded in both periods, but the smaller gain provides less support to the current quarter's earnings.
India formulation sales reached ₹5,552.28 crore, against ₹4,734.79 crore. The release puts that growth at 17.3%. US formulation sales were $455 million, down 8.2% in dollar terms. The rupee sales table shows ₹4,347.10 crore for the US, against ₹4,328.79 crore, illustrating why dollar and rupee comparisons should not be treated as interchangeable.
Sun also cautions that its acquisition of Innovcare Lifesciences during the quarter makes the quarter and half-year results not comparable with the other periods presented. The year-on-year changes in this report are calculations from the filed figures, not claims of like-for-like growth across an unchanged business.
Half-year figures show the same profit pressure
For April to September, revenue from operations was ₹31,498.59 crore, against ₹28,329.71 crore. Owners' profit declined to ₹4,883.32 crore from ₹5,396.58 crore. Quarterly basic earnings per share fell to ₹8.30 from ₹13, while the half-year figure fell to ₹20.40 from ₹22.50. The quarterly earnings-per-share figures are not annualised.
These results follow Dalimss News coverage of Trent's September-quarter accounts and Coal India's Q2 results. Sun has scheduled its earnings call for 6:30 pm IST on October 30. That call is still ahead of this report's share-price snapshot; no later management commentary is assumed here.
