Coal India reported consolidated revenue from operations of Rs 44,178.74 crore for the September quarter, up 20.9% from Rs 36,553.07 crore a year earlier. Profit attributable to owners rose 53% to Rs 6,516.09 crore from Rs 4,258.82 crore, according to its October 29 results.
Total consolidated profit after tax, including non-controlling interests, increased 57.1% to Rs 6,547.43 crore from Rs 4,167.18 crore.
Coal India says it regrouped earlier figures to make them comparable. The reconciliation adds Rs 6,366.37 crore to prior-year revenue and reduces profit after tax by Rs 95.46 crore. It also changes employee costs, other expenses and deferred tax, but does not explain the underlying reason for each adjustment.
Coal India closed at Rs 393.10 on NSE on October 29, up Rs 1.10, or 0.28%, from Rs 392.00. The closing quote was timestamped 4 pm IST.
NSE recorded the board outcome at 6:14:43 pm IST, after the closing quote. The day's share-price gain therefore cannot be presented as a response to those subsequently published financial results.
Dividend dates confirmed
The dividend filing confirms the October 29 board meeting and a Rs 10.25 second interim dividend. The record date is November 4, with electronic payment due by November 27.
What the operating filings show
A company release filed on October 1 provides the operating backdrop to the earnings. Coal supplies during the second quarter reached 186.04 million tonnes, up 12.04% from the same quarter a year earlier. Production increased more slowly, by 3.81%, to 151.37 million tonnes from 145.82 million tonnes. These are physical volumes, separate from the financial statement's rupee revenue.
Power-sector supplies in that quarter rose to 148.20 million tonnes from 133.50 million tonnes, an increase the company put at 11%. The release also said Coal India reduced pithead coal stocks by around 63 million tonnes during the first six months. That stock reduction covers the half year, not just July to September.
September alone accounted for 61.20 million tonnes of supplies, against 54.40 million tonnes a year earlier. Output for the month was 53.50 million tonnes, compared with 49 million tonnes. The monthly figures should not be substituted for the quarter's totals when reading the results.
Auction allocations and prices
A separate October 1 exchange filing gives provisional e-auction data for coal and coal products. In September, Coal India offered 130.19 lakh tonnes and allocated 93.64 lakh tonnes, or 72% of the offered quantity. The reported increase over the notified price was 94%. That percentage describes the auction price premium, not growth in the company's revenue.
For April to September, the corresponding quantities were 1,421.85 lakh tonnes offered and 571.04 lakh tonnes allocated. The allocation rate was 40%, and the reported premium over notified prices was 54%. These are half-year auction figures rather than total coal dispatches; the filing labels the data provisional.
Investment continued across mines and machinery
In a release filed on October 27, Coal India reported capital expenditure of Rs 7,966 crore for April to September, against Rs 6,283 crore a year earlier. The company described this as 27% growth and 109% of its planned half-year outlay of Rs 7,286 crore. This is a six-month investment measure, not September-quarter profit.
Mine infrastructure received Rs 2,152 crore, including railway sidings and corridors, coal-handling plants, silos and weighbridges. Land acquisition accounted for Rs 2,033 crore, while mine development absorbed more than Rs 1,000 crore. The breakdown shows where expenditure went rather than establishing how much each project contributed to the newly reported earnings.
Plant and machinery expenditure was Rs 1,394 crore, including Rs 452 crore for heavy earth-moving machinery. More than Rs 739 crore went into diversification projects spanning solar energy, critical minerals, coal gasification and thermal generation. Mine infrastructure, plant and machinery, land acquisition and diversification together accounted for more than 79% of the half-year capital expenditure.
For the preceding quarter, Coal India's original July 27 filing reported consolidated revenue of Rs 46,254.80 crore and total profit after tax of Rs 8,849.81 crore. Both exceeded the September-quarter amounts. The sequential comparison answers a different question from the year-on-year increase: it compares adjacent quarters rather than the same period in successive years.
