Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, or PMSBY, is a renewable accident insurance scheme for eligible bank or post office account holders aged 18 to 70. The stated annual premium is Rs 20 per person. It provides Rs 2 lakh for accidental death or specified permanent total disability, and Rs 1 lakh for the specified permanent partial disability. It does not reimburse hospital bills.

The practical question is whether a person has actually enrolled and whether the premium has reached the insurer. Having a bank account alone does not establish active cover. The Department of Financial Services PMSBY FAQs, checked on 1 November 2026, explain consent, auto-debit and the conditions under which protection ends.

What does PMSBY cover?

The Rs 2 lakh disability benefit applies to total and irrecoverable loss of both eyes, loss of use of both hands or feet, or the combination of loss of sight in one eye and loss of use of a hand or foot. The Rs 1 lakh benefit applies to total and irrecoverable loss of sight in one eye or loss of use of one hand or foot. A temporary injury does not automatically meet these definitions.

These distinctions matter when a family sees the phrase accident insurance. The scheme is not a general hospitalisation policy or a payment for every injury. The department explicitly says there is no reimbursement of hospitalisation expenses. It also says that partial disability outside the specified irreversible losses does not attract a benefit.

Death due to suicide is excluded. The FAQs say accidental death or qualifying disability from natural calamities can be covered, and death from murder is covered. Every claim still needs the relevant evidence and assessment under the policy. A family should ask its participating bank or post office which insurer administers its cover.

PMSBY eligibility and how to apply

Individual holders of participating bank or post office accounts can subscribe if they meet the age conditions. Joint account holders can each join, provided each person qualifies and pays the premium. One person can obtain PMSBY through only one account, even when they hold accounts at several institutions.

  1. Ask the participating bank or post office for the PMSBY enrolment and consent form.
  2. Check the personal details, account information and nominee information before signing.
  3. Provide the required account KYC and authorise the annual premium auto-debit.
  4. Keep the acknowledgement and check that the premium was debited.
  5. Ask for confirmation of the insurer, cover period and claim procedure.

India Post's PMSBY page provides access to the consent form, claim form, rules and operating procedure. Its scheme description identifies Aadhaar as the primary KYC for the account. Ask the institution to confirm any remaining documentation for your particular account. PIB also describes enrolment through a participating bank's online banking facility where offered.

How to check PMSBY status and renewal

The standard insurance year runs from 1 June to 31 May. Delayed enrolment or renewal is possible on payment of the annual premium. The department says risk cover for a new or rejoining subscriber starts from the date the premium is auto-debited. Do not assume that a later debit retrospectively covers an earlier accident.

For a status check, take the acknowledgement and premium transaction to the participating institution and request confirmation that the enrolment is active. Its records matter more than an unsolicited message claiming that a government payment is waiting. The official FAQ does not describe a universal public beneficiary-status search that replaces the bank or post office's records.

Cover can end when the member reaches the specified age limit, closes the account or has insufficient balance to maintain insurance. Multiple enrolments do not multiply the payout: the FAQ restricts protection to one account and says duplicate premiums may be forfeited. Review the nominee details whenever family circumstances change.

Documents and help when making a claim

For accidental death, the nominee or appointee can claim, or legal heirs where no nomination exists. Disability benefits go to the insured person's account; death benefits go to the nominee or legal heirs. The department requires documentary confirmation of accidental death and explains that the necessary evidence depends on the incident. Relevant police or immediate hospital records may therefore matter.

Begin with the participating branch and obtain its current claim form and document checklist. The official Jan Suraksha contact page lists national toll-free numbers 1800-180-1111 and 1800-110-001. Use the insurer and bank's official grievance channels for a pending claim. This review found no newly announced change to the Rs 20 premium; it is an explanation of the rules currently displayed, not a fresh benefit announcement or a guarantee of payment.
