An e-Shram card records an eligible unorganised worker in the government's national database and provides a Universal Account Number, or UAN. Registration is free. It can help you find and track welfare schemes, but a card by itself should not be treated as an approval for a fixed monthly payment. The amount and conditions depend on the particular scheme in which you enrol.

Who is eligible for an e-Shram card?

The PIB explanation dated 25 August 2026 says registration covers unorganised workers aged 16 and above who are not income-tax payers or members of EPFO or ESIC. It identifies construction, domestic, agricultural, migrant, gig and platform workers, along with street vendors, among the groups covered.

The ministry's eligibility and objectives page also excludes membership of government-funded NPS. It describes home-based, self-employed and wage workers within the unorganised-worker definition. These conditions should be checked together. Being within the age range alone does not establish eligibility, and an occupational label should not replace checking your actual employment and social-security status.

Use the current official eligibility wording when preparing an application. If your circumstances do not fit the categories clearly, take that specific question to the helpdesk or an assisted registration centre. For example, explain whether you are self-employed, receive wages, or already belong to another social-security arrangement. Do not choose an inaccurate category merely to move through the form.

What documents are needed and how do you register?

The portal lists an Aadhaar number and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number for registration. Its objectives explain why Aadhaar is involved: the database links worker records to identity and supports coordination between government departments. Keep your identity details and present occupation ready before starting, so the record describes your current circumstances.

Start from the official e-Shram website and follow its registration route. PIB also identifies Common Service Centres and State Seva Kendras as assisted routes. The registration itself carries no charge, including through a registering agency. If you need help entering information, review the completed details before accepting them.

According to the official FAQs, workers without an Aadhaar-linked mobile number can use biometric authentication at a CSC or SSK. The card does not expire and does not need renewal. Keep the existing record updated when relevant details change, rather than assuming a new card is required.

How to check e-Shram benefits and scheme status

Existing registrants can use their UAN to enter the One-Stop Solution through the homepage. The FAQs describe options for finding eligible schemes, viewing enrolled schemes, updating the profile and downloading the UAN card. An Apply option indicates that enrolment has not yet taken place; View opens information for an enrolled scheme.

Read the scheme name before interpreting any result. A record of registration, a route to apply, an enrolment record and a payment entry answer different questions. For a payment query, note the particular scheme and the period involved. That gives the responsible department something specific to check.

The scheme directory separates pensions, insurance, food security, housing and other support. Its entries carry their own eligibility and benefit conditions. A pension listing should therefore be read as information about that pension scheme, rather than a promise that every e-Shram registrant will receive it. Confirm the applicable rules on the linked official scheme portal before applying.

What has changed, and where can workers get help?

The One-Stop Solution was introduced on 21 October 2024. PIB's August 2026 account describes the portal's broader role in connecting welfare, employment, skilling and pension services. It also records the introduction of support for 22 languages in 2025. These are service developments; they do not establish a fresh universal cash entitlement.

The helpdesk hours displayed by the ministry are 9 am to 6 pm daily, including Sundays. When seeking assistance, keep the error message, the action you attempted and the relevant scheme name ready. The FAQs state that registration has no fixed closing date, so an unofficial countdown should not be the basis for a rushed application.
