Uttar Pradesh Hikes Monthly Welfare Pension to ₹1,500; Introduces New Age Proof Rules

LUCKNOW — In a major boost to the state’s social safety net, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a substantial increase in monthly pension payouts for vulnerable communities. The monthly financial assistance provided to eligible senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities has been raised from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.

The upward revision pushes the total annual benefit to ₹18,000 per beneficiary. The state will continue its current distribution model, transferring payouts in quarterly installments of ₹4,500 directly into the verified bank accounts of beneficiaries via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Shift in Application Guidelines: Aadhaar Excluded as Age Proof

Alongside the pension hike, the state administration has implemented critical changes to the old-age pension application process to streamline verification.

Significantly, the government will no longer accept Aadhaar cards as valid proof of age for new applicants. Instead, individuals seeking to enroll in the scheme must present alternative officially approved records to establish their date of birth. Accepted documents now include:

  • High school certificates or matriculation marksheets

  • Certified copies of the local Family Register (Parivar Register)

  • Other officially sanctioned government birth records

All baseline eligibility criteria—including defined annual household income thresholds and the strict exclusion of individuals already drawing pensions from other state or central welfare schemes—remain fully active.

Expanded Convergence Benefits for Widows

The revised policy places special emphasis on the holistic rehabilitation of widowed women across Uttar Pradesh. Apart from receiving the enhanced monthly stipend of ₹1,500, eligible beneficiaries under the widow pension scheme are now slated to be systematically linked with prominent state and central welfare schemes. Subject to individual criteria verification, beneficiaries will be integrated into:

  • Healthcare: The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to ensure cashless medical coverage.

  • Housing: Premium affordable housing initiatives, specifically the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and the Chief Minister Housing Scheme (Mukhya Mantri Awas Yojana).
