PMJJBY allows eligible account holders aged 18 to 50 to join, while existing members can continue annual renewal until age 55, subject to the scheme's conditions. The standard annual premium is Rs 436 for life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh. The entry limit and continuation limit answer different questions: someone above 50 cannot treat the renewal provision as permission to enrol for the first time.

| Continuation | Annual renewal up to age 55, subject to conditions |
| Full annual premium | Rs 436 |

PMJJBY age limit for enrolment and renewal
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana is renewable term life insurance offered through participating banks and post offices. The official Jan Suraksha FAQ permits individual account holders in the 18-50 age group to join. It describes termination on attaining 55 years, using the age-near-birthday provision, with annual renewal required up to that point. Ask the participating institution to confirm eligibility against its records of your date of birth.
A person may join through only one bank or post office account. Multiple accounts do not create multiple PMJJBY benefits. The FAQ says that if duplicate premiums are inadvertently received, the insurance cover remains restricted to Rs 2 lakh and duplicate premiums may be forfeited. Joint account holders can each join if individually eligible and if each pays the applicable premium.
PMJJBY premium: annual payment and joining during the year
The published annual premium is Rs 436, collected through account auto debit after the subscriber gives consent. For first-time enrolment during the insurance year, the FAQ lists Rs 436 for June-August, Rs 342 for September-November, Rs 228 for December-February and Rs 114 for March-May. Renewal requires the full annual premium. These published amounts were checked on 2 November 2026 at approximately 21:51 IST.
That schedule makes Rs 342 the published first-entry amount for someone joining in November, subject to eligibility and confirmation by the participating bank or post office. It is not a lower annual renewal price. The policy year still runs from 1 June to 31 May, so a part-year payment should not be mistaken for a fresh twelve-month insurance period starting on the payment date.
Maintain the balance required for the authorised debit and check that enrolment has actually been recorded. The FAQ identifies account closure and insufficient balance as events that can end cover. A completed application or an intention to renew is not enough to establish that insurance remains active. The participating institution can confirm the debit and the insurer associated with the account.
What does PMJJBY cover, and what is the 30 day rule?
The scheme provides a Rs 2 lakh death benefit for death due to any cause, subject to its terms. For new entrants, non-accidental death during the first 30 days after enrolment is excluded. This waiting restriction also applies to rejoining members. Accidental death is treated differently under that provision, so a blanket statement that every cause is covered immediately would be misleading.
The FAQ describes PMJJBY as pure term insurance with no investment component, maturity benefit or surrender value. The insured person does not receive Rs 2 lakh simply for completing the annual period. A payable benefit arises on an insured death after the applicable conditions have been examined. The scheme should not be presented as a savings account, guaranteed return or routine government cash transfer.
How to enrol and check PMJJBY insurance records
Use the participating bank or post office and its prescribed consent form. The official forms page provides application and claim documents in several languages. The application asks for account details, date of birth, identity information, nominee details and consent to auto debit. It lists accepted KYC documents, including Aadhaar, EPIC, MGNREGA card, driving licence, PAN or passport.
The application includes an acknowledgement slip and insurance certificate section for the institution to complete. Keep that record and the premium debit details. For an enrolment or renewal status query, approach the bank or post office administering your cover rather than assuming that downloading the blank form confirms insurance. The Jan Suraksha forms page lists national assistance numbers 1800-180-1111 and 1800-110-001.
Documents and timing for a PMJJBY claim
The official claim form says it should preferably be submitted within 30 days of the member's death. It requests proof of death, the claimant's identity and account evidence, with additional documents for cases such as a predeceased nominee or a legal-heir claim. Obtain the current checklist from the institution. Claim submission does not guarantee settlement before the bank and insurer verify coverage and documents.
