The X1 now asks a different rear-seat question

BMW introduced the X1 Long Wheelbase in India on 21 August 2026. Its launch release identifies local production at the Chennai plant and an introductory ex-showroom price matching the current website figure. That agreement matters: this comparison uses the live starting price, with the release supplying the car's specification and launch context.

The petrol engine is a 1.5-litre unit rated at 156 hp and 230 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. BMW describes front-wheel drive and comfort-oriented suspension tuning. The powertrain therefore needs to be understood on its own terms, rather than assuming that a BMW SUV necessarily has rear-wheel drive.

The Long Wheelbase name is especially relevant to households that regularly carry adults in the back. BMW's current product page lists rear-seat recline of up to 28.5 degrees. Checking that seating position with the front seat adjusted for the actual driver is a more useful exercise than assessing rear space with an empty front cabin.

BMW lists 540 litres of luggage capacity, expanding to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded. The larger figure describes a different passenger arrangement. For an airport run with the family aboard, the useful test is whether the normal boot takes the intended luggage without requiring a seat to be folded.

The GLA retains a broader fuel choice

Mercedes-Benz lists both petrol and diesel for the GLA and says 4MATIC all-wheel drive is available on diesel models. The advertised starting figure should not be attached indiscriminately to that all-wheel-drive configuration. The SUV overview gives an entry price, rather than a complete engine-by-engine price table.

The GLA model page presents Progressive and AMG Line styling, along with comfort suspension and an electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate. Its equipment descriptions also include Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist and a parking package with a surround-view camera. Mercedes warns that illustrated accessories and fitments may not form part of standard specifications.

That qualification prevents a misleading feature-count contest. Before comparing quotations, a reader needs the equipment assigned to the particular GLA variant. A feature appearing somewhere on a family page is insufficient evidence that the least expensive configuration includes it.

Similar screens, different cabin arrangements

The BMW combines its instrument display and central screen in a curved arrangement running Operating System 9. Its cabin description includes Veganza upholstery and a floating armrest. These details shape how storage, controls and the centre of the cabin are used, rather than simply adding another screen to a specification list.

The GLA pairs its displays with MBUX, voice commands and listed wireless phone charging. Those are useful functions to try with the phone and commands the driver actually uses. Screen size alone does not establish which interface is easier to operate during an ordinary journey.

The X1 launch material also specifies a Harman Kardon system with 12 speakers and 205 watts. That is a concrete equipment detail, but a cabin demonstration remains more informative than treating amplifier output as a direct measure of listening quality. Seat position and the type of audio played affect the experience.

Compare the actual configuration, then the daily use

This pairing has a clear practical tension: the X1 LWB places rear-cabin accommodation near the centre of its proposition, while the GLA provides a fuel and drivetrain choice that the cited BMW petrol launch does not. Neither difference can be reduced to the starting-price order. The regular passenger mix and chosen engine are the useful next comparisons.
