GURUGRAM: Vani Kapoor finished second at her home course in DLF Phase V on Sunday, October 25, as Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum won the Hero Women's Indian Open for a fourth time. The final result at DLF Golf & Country Club settled the tournament after Kapoor had led into the last round, with the Indian player recording her best Ladies European Tour finish.
Phatlum closed with a bogey-free 65, seven under par, to finish on 11 under and win by four strokes. Kapoor returned a final-round 70 for seven under overall. The tour's final report was published on October 25 at 7:45 pm IST and updated on October 26 at 10:32 am IST.
Three Indians finish in the leading seven
| Player | Finish | Total against par |
|---|---|---|
| Pornanong Phatlum | First | 11 under |
| Vani Kapoor | Second | 7 under |
| Shannon Tan | Third | 4 under |
| Pranavi Urs | Joint fourth | 3 under |
| Tvesa Malik | Seventh | 1 under |
Kapoor moved to 69th in the tour's Order of Merit. Urs shared fourth with Sara Kouskova, while Magdalena Simmermacher finished sixth. Phatlum's earlier Indian Open victories came in 2008, 2009 and 2012; this was her first return to India in 14 years.
The final round turned on the back nine
Kapoor and Phatlum both birdied the opening hole, with Kapoor chipping in from behind the green. Another birdie at the second put Kapoor two shots ahead before Phatlum answered at the third. Phatlum then added birdies at the fifth, eighth and ninth, leaving the pair level at the turn.
Kapoor dropped a shot at the 10th and recovered with a birdie at the 11th, but further dropped shots at the 12th and 13th handed Phatlum the advantage. The eventual champion followed a run of pars with birdies at the 15th and 16th. Pars on the last two holes completed a round without a bogey and secured the four-stroke margin.
The victory was Phatlum's 23rd career title, according to the tour's report. She accepted LET membership after the win, giving her return to Gurugram an immediate consequence for the next tournament on the schedule.
How Kapoor reached the final group
The tour's third-round report, published before Sunday's finish, provides the context for the home challenge. Kapoor had reached five under after successive rounds of 69, taking a one-shot advantage over Phatlum and defending champion Tan. Her Saturday round included birdies at the second, sixth, seventh and 11th holes, followed by a birdie at the 17th between dropped shots at the 15th and 18th.
Urs entered the last day tied fourth, two strokes behind Kapoor, while fellow DLF member Malik was tied eighth. Those positions made the final round significant for several Indian players, beyond the contest for the trophy. The Saturday report also distinguished the course from Phatlum's earlier winning venue: her previous titles came on the neighbouring Arnold Palmer layout, while this was her first tournament appearance on the Gary Player Championship Course.
Haryana Tourism lists the club's address as DLF City, Phase V, Gurgaon. Readers can revisit the earlier Gurugram tournament preview for the build-up to the event.
