GATE 2027 allows candidates to take one paper or up to two papers, but the second paper must belong to the permitted combination for the primary paper. Two unrelated choices cannot simply be added together. IIT Madras lists the allowed pairs on its official combinations page, and candidates taking two papers must use a single application. Registration is closed on the official website checked on 5 November 2026 at 9:50 pm IST, so the published combination table should not be read as an invitation to submit a new form.
| Question | Official position |
|---|---|
| Maximum papers | Two, from the permitted combinations |
| Separate application for paper two? | No, use the original application |
| Same examination building? | Not guaranteed, although both centres will be in the same city |
| Paper language | English |
GATE two paper combination 2027: how to read the list
Start with the row for your primary paper in the official GATE 2027 combination table. The codes in the second column are the permitted secondary papers for that row. This order matters when checking your application: the table is organised around a primary choice, rather than a free selection of any two subjects. Read the complete row before deciding that a familiar subject name is available.
For example, the Civil Engineering paper, CE, permits AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM and XE as secondary choices. Architecture and Planning, AR, permits CE and GE. A candidate looking at Civil Engineering and Mathematics would not find MA in the CE row. Academic overlap between two subjects is therefore not enough to establish that a combination is permitted.
Some rows have a much narrower choice. Agricultural Engineering, AG, lists CE. Geology and Geophysics, GG, lists GE, while Petroleum Engineering, PE, lists CH. Mining Engineering, MN, has no secondary paper listed. These examples show why a general statement that everyone can choose any second paper would be misleading. The permission depends on the exact codes in the current table.
The test papers and syllabus page supplies the full names behind the codes and says that GATE 2027 has 30 test papers. Match each code to that page before opening the syllabus. Similar abbreviations can refer to different disciplines, and preparing from a remembered code is an avoidable risk when the official list is available.
GATE two papers fee: what the official table says
The application fee table separates one paper and two papers, and also distinguishes the regular and extended periods. For female, SC, ST and PwD candidates, the regular fee was Rs 1,000 for one paper and Rs 2,000 for two. The extended period figures were Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,500 respectively. Here, PwD is defined on the page as Persons with Benchmark Disability.
For all other candidates, including foreign nationals, the regular figures were Rs 2,000 for one paper and Rs 4,000 for two papers. In the extended period, they were Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,500. These are application fees shown for the 2027 cycle, checked on 5 November 2026 at 9:50 pm IST. They are not a claim that payment or registration is currently available.
The distinction between the two periods also matters when comparing receipts. The extended two paper amount is not twice the extended one paper amount. Use the column corresponding to the application period and the correct candidate category. A comparison that ignores either column can make a correct payment appear inconsistent with the published schedule.
Do two GATE papers need two application forms?
No. IIT Madras explicitly says each candidate should fill only one application and add the second permitted paper to that original application. It warns that, where multiple applications are submitted, only one will be accepted and the others will be rejected without a refund of the fees paid. A second paper is a choice within the application process, rather than a reason to create another candidate record.
For applicants who have already submitted their forms, retain the application record and compare its paper codes with the published table. This guide does not establish a new correction window or permission to change a submitted choice. Any later facility to alter papers needs its own official announcement. The home page currently says that new application registration is closed.
IIT Madras also reserves room for operational changes. Additional combinations may be announced later if scheduling and infrastructure permit. Conversely, unforeseen circumstances may lead to a listed combination being removed; the page says the second paper fee would then be refunded. Neither statement means that an unlisted combination has already been approved.
Finally, plan travel around two centre addresses if necessary. The official note allows the secondary paper centre to differ from the primary paper centre within the same city. Qualifying in GATE also does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or employment.
