GATE 2027 eligibility extends beyond engineering graduates. A student in the third year or a later year of an eligible undergraduate programme, or someone who has completed a government approved degree in the listed fields, can appear. IIT Madras also confirms that there is no age limit and no restriction on the number of attempts. However, eligibility to sit GATE does not establish eligibility for every postgraduate course or recruitment process.

The distinction is especially useful for BA, BCom, BSc and BCA students. The official eligibility table includes these three year degree programmes, with students in the third year or graduates eligible to take the examination. It does not convert one degree into another or require an admitting institution to accept every GATE paper.

QuestionOfficial position

GATE 2027 eligibility by degree and year of study

The IIT Madras eligibility page lists the recognised routes separately. For BE, BTech and BPharm, the candidate must be in the third year or higher, or have completed the qualification. The same stage applies to the listed architecture, naval architecture and planning programmes, as well as the four year BSc Research or BS routes.

For a three year BSc, BA, BCom, BCA or equivalent qualification, the table permits a student currently in the third year or someone who has finished the degree. A second year student should not read the broader statement about undergraduate programmes as permission to disregard this year requirement. The detailed row is the useful check for an individual application.

The agriculture, horticulture and forestry BSc row describes a four year programme and permits candidates in the third or fourth year or those who have completed it. For an integrated MSc or five year integrated BS MS programme, the listed stage is the third year or higher, or completion. Programme names alone can be misleading, so compare both duration and current year.

Master's students also have routes. The MSc, MA, MCA or equivalent row permits candidates in the first year or higher, or graduates. A post BSc integrated ME or MTech programme has its own entry, permitting students in any of its four years or those who have completed it. Integrated programmes entered after a diploma or Class 12 have a separate third year or higher condition.

Can medical students or diploma entry students take GATE?

The medical degree row includes MBBS, BDS, BVSc and the other professional medical qualifications named in the table. It specifies the fifth, sixth, seventh or a higher semester, or completion. For the six year PharmD programme after Class 12, the table lists the third through sixth year or completion. These programme specific conditions deserve a direct check rather than an assumption based on the standard engineering route.

The official FAQs also answer the diploma entry question. A candidate who entered BE through the second year after finishing a diploma is eligible when currently studying in the third year, subject to the government approved programme condition. A diploma by itself should not be treated as the completed undergraduate degree described in the eligibility rule.

Professional society examinations require an additional recognition check. The table refers to examinations recognised as equivalent to the stated engineering or architecture qualifications and requires Section A or its equivalent to have been completed. The page includes a recognition note and references an AICTE circular. Candidates using this route should read that note against their own enrolment and qualification records.

GATE age limit, attempts and minimum marks

IIT Madras explicitly answers the age and attempt questions: neither has a limit for appearing in GATE 2027. The broad examination eligibility statement and degree table do not prescribe one common undergraduate CGPA threshold for all applicants. That should not be turned into a claim that marks never matter. A university's admission requirements can include its own academic conditions.

For qualifications obtained or pursued outside India, the official page requires the candidate to be in the third year or higher, or to have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years in the listed fields. This is an examination eligibility provision. It does not replace the receiving institution's assessment of a qualification for admission.

How to check eligibility before choosing a GATE paper

Start at the official GATE 2027 website, open Eligibility Criteria under Examination, and find the row matching your qualification. Then open FAQs and check any special circumstance, such as diploma entry. Finally, read the prospective institution's programme requirements and accepted GATE papers before deciding which examination paper serves your admission plan.

The FAQs allow one or two papers, with two paper choices restricted to the published combinations and entered in a single application. Being allowed to select a paper is different from being eligible for a particular programme using its score. Keep a separate record of the qualification, accepted paper, marks requirement and selection process for each intended course.

These rules were checked on 4 November 2026 at 21:51 IST. This eligibility guide does not announce a fresh registration window. For other parts of the process, read our GATE examination schedule guide, registration and document guide and explanation of GATE pathways to further study and recruitment.
