How to cancel a ChatGPT subscription on the web
For a personal subscription purchased directly on chatgpt.com, OpenAI lists four steps: sign in to ChatGPT, open the account menu and select Settings, select Billing, then choose Cancel under Cancel plan. Follow the cancellation flow and check the subscription status afterwards. These instructions describe the official help page; no paid account was accessed or changed to prepare this guide.
If Billing or payment controls are missing, OpenAI suggests signing in to the same ChatGPT account in a different browser and trying the billing settings again. Also check that the account is the one used for the purchase. Searching a second account for a subscription attached to the first will not establish whether renewal has stopped.

How to cancel through Google Play or Apple subscriptions
For Google Play, the official guide provides a website option. Open Google Play subscriptions, sign in with the Google account used for the purchase, select Manage next to ChatGPT and choose Cancel subscription. If asked for a reason, select one and Continue. Finish the confirmation instructions rather than stopping after opening the subscription entry.
The Play Store app route is also listed: open the app, open Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, choose Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation. If the subscription is absent, check other Google accounts used for purchases. A missing entry in the wrong account is not confirmation that the plan has ended.
For an Apple App Store purchase, OpenAI directs users to account Settings, their name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT and Cancel Subscription, followed by confirmation. If there is no cancellation option but an expiry date is displayed, the subscription may already be cancelled. Check the status through Apple before drawing a conclusion from what appears inside ChatGPT.
Will paid access stop immediately, and is there a refund?
After an ordinary cancellation, OpenAI says paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period. A granted refund can end the access covered by that charge earlier, subject to applicable law. This explains why continued paid access alone is not evidence that cancellation failed. The renewal status and end date are the useful checks.
Cancellation and a refund request serve different purposes. Cancellation stops future renewal; it does not automatically return previous payments. The help page directs refund requests for web and Google Play purchases through OpenAI Support while signed in to the account associated with the charge. For Apple purchases, requests go directly to Apple. It does not promise that every request will qualify.
If another charge appears, compare the cancellation confirmation with the next billing date and consider whether a different account or platform still has an active subscription. OpenAI warns that a cancellation within 24 hours of renewal may be too late to prevent that payment. Keep the receipt and confirmation together so the relevant charge can be identified.
Deleting an account is a separate action and is unnecessary just to stop future charges. OpenAI specifically warns that deleting ChatGPT does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription.
