NEW DELHI: Google says Gemini Gems will transition to skills for personal accounts held by users aged 18 or over on November 17, 2026. Gems will become read only that day and disappear from Gemini Apps on December 17. The practical task for existing users is to check their instructions and knowledge files before access ends, especially where a Gem contains material that cannot move to a skill.

The dates and limits below come from Google's official Gems transition help page, checked on October 28, 2026, at 22:48 IST. This is an announced transition, rather than evidence that every account has already changed. Readers using an organisation account should check their account type before applying the personal-account timetable.

What happens when Gemini Gems migrate to skills?

Google says it will recreate Gems as skills automatically, including supported files. Its page says the transition for personal account users under 18 will come later, with details still to be announced. Do not assume that a family member's account or a school account will follow the adult personal-account schedule simply because the interface looks similar.

Skills put reusable instructions inside an ordinary Gemini chat. Google describes automatic application when relevant and the ability to combine several skills. That changes the way a saved workflow is organised: a reader who previously chose a separate Gem for each task should think about which instructions belong together and which should stay separate.

For example, a small association might have one set of instructions for meeting summaries and another for public notices. Keep each task's purpose clear. If the summary instructions ask for unresolved questions while the notice instructions ask for a polished announcement, inspect the result when both are applied. This is a suggested review exercise, not a claim that Gemini will always identify such conflicts.

Which Gem files may not transfer?

The official page lists unsupported material including GitHub files, audio, video, legacy Office formats such as .doc, .xls and .ppt, and compressed archives. Google also says that if a Gem exceeds the skill file limit during automatic transition, it removes the largest files first until the total is under the limit. Download material that matters before the personal-account removal date.

A useful preparation sheet has three columns: the original filename, whether the new skill includes it, and where an independent copy is stored. Write down what each document contributes. A style guide and a sample output serve different purposes, so a missing small file can matter more to a workflow than a larger background document.

Check the content as well as the filenames. A document can be present while containing an outdated address, an old policy or an example you no longer want followed. Migration provides a sensible moment to remove those ambiguities from your own source material. Do not treat automatic transfer as an editorial review of the files.

How to recreate a Gem as a skill manually

Google's documented route starts by opening the Gem, downloading its knowledge files individually and keeping its details available. In another tab, open Customize, then Skills, and choose Create followed by Create manually. Copy the Gem's name, description and instructions, then create the skill. These steps have been checked against the public help instructions; no account was accessed for this report.

To add files, the help page describes downloading the new skill, putting its SKILL.md file alongside the knowledge documents in a folder whose name matches the skill, and using Replace skill to upload that folder. Follow the official sequence closely if you need this route. A reader with a simple text-only workflow may not need the file-handling stage at all.

Before relying on the replacement, try an ordinary task and an incomplete task. An original test prompt for a meeting-summary workflow is: “Use the supplied meeting notes to list decisions, owners and unresolved questions. If an owner or deadline is absent, write 'not supplied'. Do not infer it.” Its purpose is to test whether the saved instructions handle missing information visibly.

What should existing Gemini users check next?

Feature parity needs attention. Google's current page says skills do not yet support some Gem tools, including Canvas and Deep Research. A copied instruction that requests one of those tools therefore needs a separate review. Keep a record of the expected output and compare it with what the available workflow actually produces.
