Varanasi Municipal Corporation Announces Honorarium Hike for Outsourced Sanitation Workers, Union Calls It “Inadequate”

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has announced an increase in the honorarium of outsourced sanitation workers through an official press release, describing the move as a decision taken in the best interest of sanitation staff working across the city.
According to the municipal administration, the hike is expected to provide financial relief to sanitation workers and improve their economic condition. Officials stated that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment toward the welfare of workers engaged in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation services in Varanasi.
However, the announcement has drawn criticism from the Uttar Pradesh Local Bodies Joint Sanitation Workers' Union. State President Sonchandra Valmiki expressed dissatisfaction over the increase, calling it a “lollipop” offered by the government rather than meaningful financial support.
He alleged that the administration has misled outsourced sanitation workers by announcing an honorarium hike that remains far too small when compared to rising inflation and increasing living expenses. According to him, the revised amount will not bring any major improvement in the financial condition of workers and their families.
The union leader further claimed that the government is attempting to pacify sanitation workers through symbolic announcements while larger issues related to wages, job security, and working conditions continue to remain unresolved.
The issue has sparked discussions among sanitation workers and civic employees in Varanasi regarding the adequacy of financial support being provided to outsourced staff amid increasing economic pressure.
