Varanasi Intensifies Drain Cleaning Ahead of Monsoon, Residents Demand Permanent Sewer and Repair Solutions

Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has intensified drain cleaning operations across different parts of the city in an effort to prevent waterlogging and improve drainage management. Municipal Commissioner officials have reportedly issued strict directives for cleaning, repairing, and streamlining drainage systems to minimize public inconvenience during heavy rainfall.

The civic administration claims that preparations are being carried out on priority to ensure smoother water flow and reduce flooding risks in low-lying and densely populated areas. Drain desilting and cleaning drives are currently underway in multiple localities of the city.

However, many local residents argue that drain cleaning alone will not solve the long-standing drainage issues faced every monsoon season. Residents have demanded that damaged drains be properly repaired and connected to sewer lines to ensure uninterrupted wastewater flow and prevent overflow during rains.

According to locals, several drains across different neighborhoods remain in poor structural condition due to years of inadequate maintenance. Cracked walls, damaged channels, and blocked drainage routes continue to create problems despite repeated cleaning drives.

Residents have also raised concerns about the growing menace of rats inside drains. They allege that rat infestation is further weakening the structure of drains, increasing the risk of collapse and worsening sanitation conditions in nearby residential areas.

People living in affected localities say the civic body should focus not only on temporary cleaning operations before the monsoon but also on long-term infrastructure improvements. They are demanding permanent solutions including proper sewer connectivity, reconstruction of damaged drains, and regular maintenance work to prevent recurring waterlogging and sanitation issues.

The issue once again highlights the broader urban infrastructure challenges faced by Varanasi during the rainy season, as citizens continue to seek sustainable drainage solutions from the Municipal Corporation.
