Indian Railways allows 40 kg of luggage free with an adult Sleeper, AC 3 tier or AC Chair Car ticket under its published luggage rules. The allowance is 50 kg for AC 2 tier or First Class, 70 kg for AC First Class and 35 kg for Second Class. A separate ceiling controls how much can remain inside the passenger compartment, even when excess charges are paid.

This festival travel guide checks the official Indian Railways luggage rules page as accessed on 4 November 2026. It explains the published limits and booking requirements. The date on this guide does not mean Railways has introduced a new luggage rule today, and passengers should confirm operational arrangements for their own departure station.

Train luggage allowance: free weight and maximum weight

The two weight columns answer different questions. Free allowance is the quantity that can be carried without a luggage charge. The compartment maximum is the total permitted quantity, including the free allowance. For example, the 80 kg Sleeper ceiling does not mean that a passenger can carry 40 kg free plus another 80 kg in the compartment.

The AC 3 tier and AC Chair Car row is particularly important. The published table gives both a 40 kg free allowance and a 40 kg compartment maximum. Do not assume that paying an excess charge automatically permits more luggage to remain beside the berth or seat. Larger quantities can require separate booking and carriage in the luggage van.

The rules page also lists a marginal allowance: 15 kg for AC First Class and 10 kg for each other class in the table. It discusses this margin when calculating charges on luggage detected over the free allowance. The margin is not an extra free entitlement to add to the table's free weight, nor should it be added to the compartment ceiling.

Children aged five and below 12 years are allowed half the applicable free allowance, subject to a maximum of 50 kg. Check the ticket and class when calculating a family's entitlement. Counting only the number of bags can mislead, because the rules specify weight and size rather than a single universal bag count.

What suitcase size is allowed on Indian trains?

The official page permits trunks, suitcases and boxes measuring up to 100 cm by 60 cm by 25 cm as personal luggage in passenger compartments. An item exceeding any one of those dimensions must be booked and carried in the brake van rather than the passenger compartment. Weight within the free limit does not override a size restriction.

For AC 3 tier and AC Chair Car, the page separately specifies a maximum trunk or suitcase size of 55 cm by 45 cm by 22.5 cm. Travellers with large cases should check this class specific condition before arriving at the platform. Measuring the outside dimensions at home makes it easier to identify a problem before boarding.

There are also separate bulky package provisions. The page describes packages over 100 kg or exceeding specified outside dimensions of 1 metre by 1 metre by 0.7 metre, along with a limited dimensional tolerance under stated conditions. These provisions are not a reason to assume that a bulky package can remain in a passenger compartment. Ask the booking office to assess its category.

How to book excess luggage before departure

The published rules say luggage intended to travel by the same train as its owner should reach the luggage office at the originating station at least 30 minutes before the advertised departure. Treat that as the stated presentation requirement, not a promise that a complicated booking can be completed in half an hour during a busy festival departure.

Make sure the package is securely packed and fully, legibly addressed in English or Hindi. The rules say inadequately addressed luggage will not be accepted for booking and carriage. They also specify documentation where defective packing is accepted. A luggage booking is a separate task from reserving the passenger's berth.

After paying the prescribed charge, obtain the luggage ticket and have the passenger ticket endorsed with the cross reference required by the rules. Keep the documents available during the journey. Passengers who reserve accommodation in advance are permitted to book luggage in advance at the same time, according to the page.

Charges, restricted items and a final packing check

The page says booked excess luggage in the owner's charge, within the permitted compartment maximum, is charged at 1.5 times the luggage rate. Detected unbooked or partly booked excess can attract six times the luggage scale rate, with separate treatment for the marginal allowance. This is not a flat rupee fine for every bag. Ask the booking office to calculate the applicable charge.

Explosives, dangerous and inflammable articles, empty gas cylinders, acids and other corrosive substances are among the prohibited luggage listed. Merchandise is not permitted as personal luggage in the compartment. Check the contents as well as the weight, especially when transporting festival purchases or goods for someone else.

Before leaving, compare the class, combined weight, outside dimensions and contents with the official rules. Then check the train itself.
