IRCTC retiring rooms can be booked against a valid confirmed or RAC train ticket, subject to accommodation being available. A waitlisted ticket is not eligible. For holiday travellers checking the rules on 3 November 2026, the other crucial point is confirmation: a successful payment alone does not secure a room. IRCTC says the booking becomes confirmed when a Retiring Room Reference Number is generated.

These are station accommodation facilities, with single rooms, double rooms and dormitory beds in AC and non AC categories. They can be useful when a journey leaves a gap before departure or after arrival, but a train reservation does not automatically include a retiring room. The room or bed is a separate reservation with its own dates, documents and cancellation conditions.

How to book an IRCTC retiring room

Start from the official IRCTC Tourism homepage and select Retiring Room. Its public FAQ directs users to this service. Before completing a reservation, check the station, passenger names, room or bed count, identity details and both the check in and check out dates and times. A late night arrival makes the calendar date especially easy to misread.

The detailed retiring room FAQ allows one booking at the source station and one at the destination station against a PNR. Accommodation depends on the passengers included in the ticket and the permitted room combinations. For example, the published table allows two passengers one double room or two dormitory beds. That is an allocation rule, rather than a promise that either option will be available.

Keep the generated reference number and print the booking voucher. IRCTC asks the customer to bring the original identity proof whose details were entered during booking. The identity details must match at check in. Its FAQ also says that name changes and journey alterations are not permitted for a retiring room booking, so review those fields before confirming.

Can a retiring room be booked for three hours?

Hourly booking exists at selected stations. The detailed FAQ describes a general booking duration of 12 to 48 hours, then separately explains hourly reservations from three hours. The shorter homepage FAQ leads with the three to 48 hour range. Read those statements together: a three hour booking is an option where the hourly facility is offered, rather than a universal minimum at every station.

The hourly rules distinguish a daytime block from 09:00 to 21:00 and an overnight block from 21:00 to 09:00. The overnight block generally cannot be booked partly, although the FAQ lists an exception where a room or bed is scheduled to be vacated earlier. Someone seeking just a few hours late at night should therefore check the period actually offered before accepting the charge.

Service charges are separate from the room tariff. The FAQ lists Rs 20 for a retiring room and Rs 10 for a dormitory bed up to 24 hours, rising to Rs 40 and Rs 20 respectively for 24 to 48 hours. It says GST applies to the service charge and that this charge is non refundable. These published figures were checked on 3 November 2026 at 23:11 IST; the payable accommodation total depends on the selected booking.

IRCTC retiring room cancellation rules

The published cancellation table specifies a 20% deduction when cancellation is two or more days before the check in date, 50% one day before, and no refund on the check in date. It excludes the check in date when counting. However, an illustrative example on the detailed FAQ does not align fully with that table. Check the cancellation amount shown against your reservation before confirming a cancellation, especially near a date boundary.

Online bookings must be cancelled online, rather than at a counter. Cancellation after check in is not permitted. Partial cancellation means cancelling a room or bed; it does not mean removing an individual passenger from the reservation. If money is debited without a confirmed booking, check Booking History. The detailed FAQ describes a refund to the same account under the applicable process, without giving a fixed completion deadline there.
