Tatkal booking opens at 10 am IST for AC classes and 11 am IST for non AC classes, including Sleeper, one day before the train's departure date from its originating station. For November festival travel, the date at the train's origin is the detail to check first. Your boarding date at an intermediate station may be later, so counting back only from that date can make you miss the opening.
This guide was checked on 2 November 2026. The opening times come from IRCTC's Tatkal FAQ; Aadhaar and OTP requirements come from the Ministry of Railways' published instructions. These are booking rules, not a live availability report. They do not establish that a particular festival special, train, class or boarding point has Tatkal seats.
| Booking detail | Rule to use |
|---|---|
| AC opening | 10 am IST |
| Non AC opening, including Sleeper | 11 am IST |
| Date reference | One day before departure from the origin |
| Online identity requirement | Aadhaar authenticated user and Aadhaar OTP |
| Agent restriction at opening | First 30 minutes |
When does Sleeper Tatkal booking open?
For Sleeper, use the 11 am opening. For an eligible AC class, use 10 am. The official IRCTC FAQ says Tatkal is offered on selected trains and warns that the quota may be unavailable for some trains, classes or locations. Check your exact journey combination before treating the opening time as a booking opportunity.
Consider a simple calendar example. If a train starts from its origin on 4 November 2026, its opening-day Tatkal window is on 3 November: 10 am for AC and 11 am for non AC. If you board that train later in its journey on 5 November, the relevant origin date remains 4 November. This example applies the rule; it is not an announcement of a specific train service.
The booking search should therefore match the train's actual origin departure, your boarding station, destination and class. A result showing ordinary reserved availability is not necessarily a Tatkal result. Select the appropriate quota and read the availability displayed for that combination, especially when several trains use similar names or serve different terminals.
Is Aadhaar OTP required for Tatkal booking?
The Railway Ministry release dated 11 June 2025 set two stages for online bookings. From 1 July 2025, users booking Tatkal through IRCTC's website and application must be Aadhaar authenticated. From 15 July 2025, online Tatkal booking also requires Aadhaar based OTP authentication. These are established requirements, not changes introduced today.
The release separately covers computerised Passenger Reservation System counters and authorised agents. For those bookings, it requires system based OTP authentication sent to the contact number supplied by the user when booking, effective 15 July 2025. Do not assume that asking an agent to book removes the need for the prescribed verification.
For authorised agents, the same release bars opening-day Tatkal bookings during the first 30 minutes. Its stated windows are 10 am to 10.30 am for AC and 11 am to 11.30 am for non AC. That is a restriction on authorised agents, not a new public opening time of 10.30 am or 11.30 am.
Can you cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket for a refund?
IRCTC's refund and cancellation rules say voluntary cancellation of a confirmed Tatkal ticket does not earn a fare refund under the ordinary rule. Waitlisted and RAC cases have their own conditions. A train cancelled by the Railways, a qualifying delay or another listed contingency must be assessed under the relevant refund provision, rather than treated as an ordinary change of travel plans.
The detailed rules also address a family or party Tatkal ticket containing both confirmed and waitlisted passengers. They allow a refund less clerkage for confirmed passengers too when the entire ticket is surrendered within the specified limit of up to 30 minutes before scheduled departure. Check the full provision against your PNR and circumstances before cancelling; a general FAQ cannot decide every mixed-status case.
Before paying, verify the date, station codes, class, passenger details and final ticket status. Payment alone should not be read as a promise of the berth you wanted. For the rest of a festival journey, our NTES running-status guide, Chhath date guide and Guru Nanak Jayanti holiday guide cover separate checks.
