NEW DELHI: Volkswagen lists the Golf GTI at Rs 50,90,900 ex-showroom, while Skoda lists the Octavia RS from Rs 56,69,000. The Golf's published figure is lower by Rs 5,78,100. Both official India pages specify a turbocharged petrol engine with a seven-speed DSG, but matching headline outputs do not make these cars interchangeable.

Price as of 1 November 2026, 00:04 IST. These are website figures, excluding the additional items needed for an on-road quotation. Volkswagen's page also says the Golf GTI is currently sold out. Its displayed price should therefore be read as a published reference, without assuming that a new booking can be fulfilled.

The common engine figures need a second look

The power and torque columns are unusually close: the brands publish the same maximum outputs and the same transmission type. Yet the acceleration claims differ. That is a useful reminder that an engine specification describes only part of a car. It does not establish that two vehicles will respond identically when driven.

The quoted acceleration times are manufacturer claims, rather than the result of a comparison test by this publication. Nor does the shorter time establish a universal advantage in everyday traffic. Visibility, seat comfort, road surface and the way the driver uses the car all deserve separate attention.

For the standalone Skoda figure and its equipment context, see our Octavia RS price report. This comparison uses the current official model pages and does not treat a previously reported booking window as evidence of present availability.

A hatchback cabin and an RS specification

Volkswagen's India page describes plaid seats, paddle shifts and a panoramic sunroof. Skoda lists RS sports seats, LED Matrix headlights and a head-up display. These are identifiable differences in the published equipment, rather than reasons to assume that the more expensive car is automatically better for every household.

The Golf's cabin presentation makes its hot-hatch identity explicit. The Octavia's specification puts more emphasis on the front-seat equipment and lighting. Someone comparing the pair can separate those priorities before getting distracted by the fact that both engines produce the same maximum power.

Equipment should still be checked against the particular vehicle being offered. A display car, an international photograph and an India specification sheet can serve different purposes. For this reason, the official overseas Golf photograph accompanying this article illustrates the model and should not be treated as an inventory of locally supplied equipment.

What the price gap can and cannot tell you

The Rs 5,78,100 difference is arithmetic based on the published entry figures. It is not a comparison of insurance, registration, finance charges or ownership costs. Adding an assumed percentage to either figure would create a false impression of precision, especially without the purchaser's registration and insurance details.

There is also a practical distinction between comparing a price and comparing an available car. If a written quotation is obtained, the relevant checks are the exact specification, invoice price, model year and delivery commitment. The website alone cannot settle those points, and this report does not claim that it can.

For a different example of how cabin priorities divide a premium range, our Kodiaq variant comparison examines its named versions. Readers following Volkswagen's larger family models can also consult the Tayron price list.

The meaningful comparison here is specific: the Golf carries the lower published price, while the Octavia RS brings a different equipment proposition despite matching maximum engine outputs. Those facts establish the starting point for understanding the pair. They do not substitute for a current written specification or an actual back-to-back assessment.
