NEW DELHI: Marshall's Kilburn III can charge a phone or another USB device when the speaker is switched on and has more than 20% battery remaining. That threshold comes from the company's charging instructions. The feature uses the speaker's rear USB-C connection and requires a lead suitable for the device being charged.
| Kilburn III charging-bank check | Official instruction or specification |

| Device lead | USB-C with a connector suitable for the device |
| Speaker battery display | 10 segments |
| Speaker playback claim | 50+ hours |
| Protection rating | IP54 |
Start with the speaker, then the cable
First switch the Kilburn III on and check that its battery is above the stated threshold. Then connect the phone, tablet or other USB device using the appropriate lead. Marshall's instructions describe those as the steps for using the speaker as a charging bank; pairing the phone over Bluetooth is not listed as a charging requirement.
The rear port has two roles in the manual: it accepts power to recharge the speaker and supplies power when another device is attached. For an owner accustomed to thinking of a speaker's USB socket only as a charging inlet, that distinction explains why the same physical connection appears in both sets of instructions.
A weekend stay can make the feature relevant without turning the speaker into a replacement for a complete charging setup. The phone may hold the playlist, travel details and camera files, while the speaker provides the music. The useful question is whether the speaker has spare charge at that moment, rather than whether its advertised playback duration sounds generous.
Playback time is a different claim
Marshall advertises 50+ hours of portable playback for Kilburn III. It does not give a guaranteed count of phone recharges in the charging-bank instructions. That playback figure therefore cannot be converted into a claim that a particular handset will recharge fully, or repeatedly, from the speaker.
The distinction becomes especially important when several people share the equipment. A long listening claim describes one advertised function, while charging another device adds a different task. Owners need to check the speaker's remaining battery instead of treating the headline duration as a separate reserve dedicated to the phone.
The battery indicator has 10 segments, and Marshall says a rising animation indicates charging. The guide does not turn those segments into a promise of an exact remaining number of listening hours. The display is useful for checking state, but the manual's more-than-20% requirement remains the relevant instruction for the charging-bank function.
Recharging Kilburn III has its own conditions
The product specification quotes a full recharge in approximately 3 hours with a 30W USB-C PD charger. It also quotes 8 hours of playback from a 20-minute charge using that charger. These are claims about adding power to the speaker, not about the rate at which the speaker will charge a phone.
Its listed box contents include a USB-C to USB-C cable, the speaker and documentation. A wall charger is not among those listed items. A household organising cables before a trip should therefore distinguish the included lead from the power adapter used to recharge the speaker, and from any connector a different device may need.
Dry connections and sensible storage
Marshall requires the speaker to be completely dry before charging. Kilburn III's IP54 description covers dust and splash resistance; it is not an instruction to connect power while the unit is wet. The company also recommends battery-preservation settings through the Marshall Bluetooth app and keeping the speaker away from hot, unventilated storage.
That is a practical concern when the speaker moves between a balcony, a bag and a parked car. The charging feature is convenient, but it does not remove the care instructions for the speaker's own battery. Before packing it away for an extended period, Marshall recommends roughly half charge and cool, dark, dry storage.
