Airtel's new postpaid plans include a five-day international roaming allowance, but customers switching before a holiday need to check their eligibility date. Announced on 7 October and available from 8 October, the plans carry a waiting period for new postpaid users and an exit charge for customers who use the benefit and leave shortly afterwards.

The company's announcement lists 5GB of data, 60 call minutes and 25 outgoing SMS for one overseas trip per SIM each year, with incoming SMS free. This is a limited travel allowance attached to an eligible plan. It does not make every overseas call or the entire duration of a longer holiday free.

Which plans include the roaming benefit?

The listed individual-plan rental is Rs 499. Family plans cost Rs 749 for two SIMs, Rs 1,049 for three, and Rs 1,249 or Rs 1,449 for four. The Rs 1,799 plan covers five SIMs. Listed rental price as of 11 October 2026, 09:35 IST. These are the published plan rentals, not a quote for a customer's final bill.

The difference between the two four-SIM tiers includes Netflix Basic on the Rs 1,449 plan. Airtel lists Netflix Standard with the Rs 1,799 tier. Travellers should separate the roaming allowance from entertainment subscriptions when comparing plans: paying for a higher tier does not increase the five-day complimentary allowance described in this announcement.

Airtel's app FAQ says new customers become eligible after 90 days. Existing postpaid subscribers can move to a qualifying plan, but must have completed at least 90 days on an Airtel retail postpaid plan. A prepaid customer moving to postpaid therefore cannot rely on this benefit for an imminent departure.

That distinction matters more than the headline rental for someone travelling this month. Check the eligible-benefit tile before counting the pack as part of a trip budget. A plan-change confirmation alone should not be treated as proof that roaming has been claimed and activated.

Claiming the pack starts a separate travel clock

Claims are made in the Airtel App's Rewards and OTTs section. According to the FAQ, customers receive a claim confirmation, then an activation communication after reaching an eligible destination and connecting to a partner network. Usage and validity can be checked in the app.

The FAQ describes coverage in more than 180 eligible countries and five continuous days after connection to an international network. Family-plan parent and voice add-on numbers claim individually. Check each traveller's number rather than assuming that the main account holder's claim covers everyone. Unused benefits cannot be transferred to another number or carried forward.

The postpaid terms define the 60-minute allowance as including incoming calls, outgoing calls within the visited country and calls to India. Customers must have no outstanding bill when claiming. Repeat eligibility runs over 12 months measured from the previous post-claim international-network connection, rather than resetting automatically on 1 January.

The same terms contain another qualification: international roaming on plans activated with a security deposit becomes available four months after the plan starts. Customers in that group need to check this longer restriction alongside the general 90-day eligibility requirement.

What happens after use or an early exit?

Using the benefit creates a further 90-day commitment to an eligible postpaid plan. Disconnection, porting out or moving to Airtel prepaid during that period attracts Rs 2,000 plus GST per number that used it. The charge can therefore apply separately to family add-ons.

Once the allowance is exhausted or expires, prevailing roaming tariffs or an applicable paid pack take over. A five-day benefit should not be budgeted as cover for a ten-day holiday. Check the remaining allowance before leaving mobile data running for the rest of the trip.

Airtel's separate roaming guidance excludes aircraft usage, satellite or premium calls and maritime or cruise services from pack discounts. It also advises switching off automatic downloads and closing background apps that consume data. These checks are useful before boarding, when there is still time to review the phone's settings.

Dalimss News has separately covered Vi's bundled international-roaming plans. Their eligibility and allowances should be compared on their own terms, without assuming that two offers described as free work identically.
