NEW DELHI: Apple lists a maximum battery cycle count of 1,000 for the 2024 MacBook Pro, including the M4 generation. Owners can find their current count in System Information. That figure is a reference for battery wear, rather than a countdown to the laptop stopping, and should be read alongside the battery condition shown in macOS.

Get the count from the Mac itself

Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. In the Hardware section, select Power and look under Battery Information. Record the cycle count together with the date so that a later check has a useful point of comparison.

A cycle measures cumulative battery use. Unplugging and reconnecting the charger does not automatically add a full cycle. For someone moving between a home desk and college, the useful question is how much battery energy has been used across those sessions, rather than how often the charging cable went into the bag.

Apple says a battery can still be used after reaching its listed maximum, although runtime may be reduced. Its guidance recommends replacement at that stage to maintain performance. A reading near the limit therefore gives an owner something concrete to discuss during a service assessment; it does not establish a repair price or entitlement.

Read condition as well as usage

Open System Settings and choose Battery. Battery Health reports whether the condition is normal or service is recommended. The information control beside the condition can show Maximum Capacity, which compares the battery's capacity with when it was new. Available controls can differ by Mac and software version.

Those readings answer separate questions. Cycle count describes accumulated use, while capacity and condition help describe the battery now. Keep them together when recording a problem. A note that says the machine runs short during a particular task, accompanied by its displayed condition, is more useful than a cycle number without any account of what happened.

The M4 generation also needs precise identification. Apple offered the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4, M4 Pro or M4 Max, while the 16-inch models used M4 Pro or M4 Max. The standard M4 configuration began with 16GB unified memory and three Thunderbolt 4 ports; the Pro and Max versions introduced Thunderbolt 5 to this range.

That distinction matters when describing a battery complaint. An owner using the standard M4 machine mainly for documents and an editor rendering projects on an M4 Max should record their own workload. The shared cycle reference does not mean identical unplugged working time. For a broader hardware comparison, see our MacBook Air and MacBook Pro comparison.

Check charging behaviour before booking service

Apple's Battery settings documentation describes Optimised Battery Charging as learning the charging routine and delaying charging beyond 80% when the Mac expects to stay connected for an extended period. A pause during desk use can therefore be expected behaviour. Check the setting before treating an incomplete charge as evidence of failure.

For an Indian household sharing a study desk, a practical record would include the task, whether the charger was connected and the battery alert, if any. Repeat the observation during the same activity. This is a way to make a symptom reproducible, rather than a home test that certifies battery health.

Separate service coverage from ordinary wear

Apple's India battery page says the one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective MacBook battery. It also says built-in batteries should be replaced by Apple or an authorised service provider. Reaching a cycle figure alone does not settle whether a particular battery is defective or what coverage applies.

Readers checking the wider range can consult the desk's Mac lineup guide and ThinkBook and MacBook Air comparison. For this maintenance check, the useful next step is to save the Mac's own readings and describe the symptom before seeking an assessment.
