The iPhone 17 at Rs 99,900 and the iPhone 18 Pro at Rs 1,64,900 both start with 256GB of storage on Apple's India store, price as of 6 October 2026, 1:35 AM IST. That makes the comparison unusually clean. You are paying Rs 65,000 more for the Pro, and the question is simply what you get for it.
We went through Apple's own comparison chart for India and set the two phones side by side. No benchmarks, no rumours, just what Apple lists.
The price ladder
The iPhone 17 on Apple India costs Rs 99,900 for 256GB and Rs 1,24,900 for 512GB. The iPhone 18 Pro costs Rs 1,64,900 for 256GB, and the 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900.
Put another way, a 512GB iPhone 17 is still Rs 40,000 cheaper than the base 18 Pro. Storage-hungry users can double their space on the 17 and still save a large sum.
The iPhone 17 itself costs more than it did at launch, a change we covered in our iPhone 17 India store price report. The 18 Pro tiers and Apple's earlier cashback terms are in our iPhone 18 Pro cashback report.
What both phones share
A lot more than the price gap suggests. Apple's chart lists ProMotion, an Always-On display and the Dynamic Island on both. Both have the Action button and the Camera Control button. Both have a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP Fusion ultra wide camera, and both support Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch display. The 18 Pro is also 6.3 inches, and the Pro Max is 6.9 inches. So the screen size argument only applies if you are looking at the Max.
What the extra Rs 65,000 buys
A telephoto camera. This is the single biggest difference. The 18 Pro has a third rear camera, a 48MP Fusion telephoto, and Apple lists optical zoom options of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x. The iPhone 17 stops at 0.5x, 1x and 2x.
A variable aperture main camera. Apple's chart says the 18 Pro's main camera offers f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0 aperture options. The iPhone 17 does not have this. In practice, variable aperture gives more control over depth of field and light, which keen photographers will value more than casual users.
Better video tools. The 18 Pro supports Dolby Vision recording up to 4K at 120 frames per second, according to Apple, along with Pro camera controls, smart focus tracking and improved low-light video. The iPhone 17 is listed at up to 4K at 60 fps, and the chart shows none of those extras on it.
More battery, on paper. Apple quotes up to 43 hours of video playback for the 18 Pro line in its chart and up to 30 hours for the iPhone 17. Apple's chart gives one "up to" figure for the Pro line, so check the per-model footnotes on Apple's site before assuming the 6.3-inch 18 Pro matches it.
A faster chip. The 18 Pro uses the A20 Pro with a 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU. The iPhone 17 uses the A19 with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU.
Storage ceiling and build
The iPhone 17 is sold in 256GB and 512GB versions on Apple's India store. The 18 Pro goes much higher: 512GB at Rs 1,89,900, 1TB at Rs 2,39,900 and 2TB at Rs 3,14,900, according to the price tiers in our earlier cashback report. If you shoot a lot of 4K video, that headroom is part of what the Pro offers.
Both phones have an 18MP Centre Stage front camera, so selfies and video calls are not a reason to choose one over the other. The build differs a little: Apple lists an aluminium frame on the iPhone 17 and an aluminium unibody on the 18 Pro.
Who should pay for the Pro
If you shoot a lot of photos of children at school functions, wildlife, stage performances or anything you cannot walk closer to, the telephoto camera is the reason to buy the Pro. Zoom is something no software trick fully replaces.
The same goes for people who make videos for work or social media. 4K at 120 fps and the Pro camera controls are tools the iPhone 17 simply does not have.
For everyone else, the iPhone 17 already covers what most people use a phone for. It has the same smooth ProMotion screen, the same Always-On display, the same two buttons and an excellent main and ultra wide camera pair. Rs 65,000 is a lot of money to spend on features you may open twice a year.
A word on offers and timing
At the time of our check, Apple's India store listed instant cashback of up to Rs 7,000 on selected models with eligible bank cards, and trade-in credit from Rs 4,500 to Rs 81,500 depending on the old phone. A high trade-in value on a recent iPhone can shrink the gap between the two phones, but it does not change the gap itself, because the trade-in applies to whichever you buy.
Apple is also bringing the iPhone Duo to India with pre-orders from 16 October. It sits well above both phones in price, but it may reshape the top end of the range in the weeks ahead.
Our verdict: the 18 Pro is worth it if you will use the telephoto and the video tools every week. If you are not sure, you probably will not, and the iPhone 17 is the better buy.
