MUMBAI: Every festive season, families with relatives in the United States or the Gulf ask the same question. Should the new iPhone come home in someone's hand luggage, or should it be bought here? We pulled the official Apple Store prices for India, the US and the UAE for three current models to put numbers on it. Every figure below is the price as of 6 October 2026, 1:35 AM IST.

A word on method. Apple does not publish an exchange rate, and banks and card networks each apply their own. So instead of converting at one rate, we divided the India price by the US and UAE prices to get an "implied rate". If that implied rate is far above what your bank charges you for dollars or dirhams, the foreign price is cheaper on paper.

The official price table

iPhone 18 Pro, 256GB: Rs 1,64,900 on Apple India, $1,199 on Apple US and AED 5,099 on Apple UAE. The implied rate works out to about Rs 137.5 per dollar and about Rs 32.3 per dirham.

iPhone 18 Pro Max, 256GB: Rs 1,79,900 in India, $1,299 in the US and AED 5,499 in the UAE. That is about Rs 138.5 per dollar and Rs 32.7 per dirham.

iPhone 17, 256GB: Rs 99,900 in India, $899 in the US and AED 3,799 in the UAE, or about Rs 111.1 per dollar and Rs 26.3 per dirham. The 512GB iPhone 17 is Rs 1,24,900, $1,099 and AED 4,649.

iPhone 17e, 256GB: Rs 79,900 in India, $699 in the US and AED 2,999 in the UAE, or about Rs 114.3 per dollar and Rs 26.6 per dirham. The 512GB model is Rs 1,04,900, $899 and AED 3,849.

The pattern is clear. The India premium is much steeper on the Pro models than on the iPhone 17 and 17e. On the 18 Pro, every implied rate is far above the rupee's market value, which means the US and UAE stickers look a lot cheaper. On the iPhone 17e the gap is smaller, though still real. For the full India line-up, see our earlier iPhone 17 and iPhone Air India store price check.

Why the sticker is not the full story

US prices on Apple's site are shown before sales tax, which varies by state and city. The amount at the till will be higher than the $1,199 headline in most places. The UAE prices are the figures shown on Apple's UAE store. Either way, your card's foreign exchange markup and any international transaction fee get added on top of the conversion.

India also has its own offers. As of the same check, the Apple India store showed instant cashback of up to Rs 7,000 on selected models with eligible cards, and trade-in credit ranging from Rs 4,500 to Rs 81,500 depending on the old phone. Our report on Apple India instant cashback for the iPhone 18 Pro and Mac tracked the earlier offer levels. A buyer in India with an old iPhone to trade in may close some of the gap without leaving the country.

The SIM tray catch on US models

This is the point many families miss. Apple's US product page for the iPhone 18 Pro says models sold in the US have no physical SIM tray and work with eSIM only. The India models support a nano-SIM, according to the India store.

Indian operators do offer eSIM on iPhones, so a US model can work here. But it means converting your connection to eSIM before you rely on the phone, and keeping that process in mind if the phone is a gift for parents who are used to swapping physical SIM cards. A UAE-bought phone does not share this US-specific note on Apple's page, but check the model details on the UAE store before you buy.

Customs at the airport

The Baggage Rules, 2026, notified in February, set a duty-free allowance of Rs 75,000 for residents and tourists of Indian origin arriving by air, according to the Ministry of Finance release on PIB. An iPhone 18 Pro bought for $1,199 or AED 5,099 is worth well above Rs 75,000 at any current exchange rate, so it crosses that allowance on its own.

Goods above the allowance attract customs duty on the excess, and they have to be declared. The new rules allow electronic and advance declaration. Walking through the green channel with an undeclared new phone above the limit is not worth the risk for a saving that may be a few thousand rupees once tax and card fees are counted.

Warranty and service

Before you buy abroad, read Apple's warranty terms on its support site for where service is available and what proof of purchase it needs. Keep the original invoice, the box and the serial number. For a phone that will be used in India for years, an Indian invoice is simpler to deal with if something goes wrong.

So which way should you go?

For the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the official US and UAE prices are low enough that a relative's purchase can still make sense even after sales tax, card fees and duty on the excess, but only if you account for every one of those costs and are comfortable with eSIM on a US model. For the iPhone 17 and 17e, the smaller India premium plus Indian bank and trade-in offers make buying at home the easier call for most people.

Whatever you decide, note the date and time you compared prices. Apple changes store prices and offers without notice, and the iPhone Duo pre-order in India from 16 October shows the line-up is still moving.
